Clicking vent fan motor

Not sure if this is the right forum but here's my question. I have a 98 Chevy Z71 and the vent fan motor for the inside vents makes an irritating clicking noise when its on. The higher you turn the fan speed, the faster the clicking. I know this is not unique to my truck as I have heard this noise from several GM trucks I've been in.

Any way to fix this problem easily or is it a major effort?

I have a '99 Yukon that makes a slight click on low speed. It goes away when the speed is increased. Mine is not load enough to warrant a replacement at this time. It's easy to change it out though and only about $20.00 for a new one (not from the dealer though).

I was just going to post about this. My '98 does the same thing. "Clicks" on low speed, sometimes on the next speed up, but usually turning up the speed stops it. The '96 I use to have did the same thing as well. It really kind of drives me nuts while highway driving.

Where can you get the $20 replacement motor? Do the replacements end up ticking too?

Thanks

Sounds like there is something inside the squirrel cage on the fan. IF a leaf or paper falls down in there it will make noise at low speeds and not on the higher speeds. Just take the fan out and see if something is inside there.

My buddy has a 99 Yukon. He had a clicking like you describe. We pulled the fan motor and found a piece of plastic from God knows where that was hitting the squirrel cage. My best guess is that is was flipped up from the road and made its way into the vent duct or something. It looked like it had been on the highway for a while.

Pull the motor/squirrel cage and feel around in there. We ended up with a mirror and a flashlight and finally found it. The noise went away.

Silly question, I have a 95 with the same problem. How do you pull the squirel cage?

Pull the motor. The squirrel cage comes out with it. On a 95, you may have to pull one of the dash bolts on the RH side to get room to pull it. It was that way on my '92.

My truck has this problem now for about two years. It clicks at low speed and as you turn it up I expect that it becomes a hum. I cleaned the squirrel cage out and it continues to do it. I am hard of hearing so it doesn't bother me but I have had passengers mention it.

I plan on living with it since it doesn't bother me until it quits.
