Tail/breaklight problem.

I live in Sweden and have imported an Escalade 2000 (I've used a wiring diagram for gm-trucks 94-98 and everything has matched so i assume that it is the same as almost all other GM-trucks).

To pass the swedish emission the turn signal has to be orange and not red.

So I changed the backuplight bulb to an orange one and rewired the turn-signal so that it flashes orange.

But the problem I have is that I get the brakelightsignal on the same light.

I've located brake and turn signal in the engine bay so I've got a "clean signal" from there but what I now wonder is where the backup/turnsignal/brakelights come from.

This is how it's now connected (with the backuplight cut off)

TR = Turn signal right

B = Brake light

BU = Backup light

0 = Space

TR----|------\

B-----|-------\-----TR/B----\

-------|---BU---------- 00000\----BU(which now is turn signal/brakelight)

I want to connect it like this instead:

TR----|-----------------\

B-----|-----------B00000\

00000|----BU---------000\----BU(which will be only turn signal)

| This line represents where the engine bay ends

| (I haven't found the merging point before the line

| But I'm not sure it isn't there)

But I don't know where to find the backuplight cable or where the TR/B merges to one.

I think it is located "behind" the engine bay (below the pedals) but I don't know if it is or how to reach it.

I would REALLY appreciate any help.

Anyone who knows where they merge and how I can reach them?

This is my first post and it seems to be a really nice forum you have here :)

IT COULD BE EASIER JUST TO GET THE TAIL LIGHT ASSMBLY MADE THAT WAY THEN TRY TO REWIRE EVERY THING,

BUT, SO IT UNDER STAND BRAKE LIGHTS MUST BE RED, TURN MUST BE ORANGE AND WHAT COLOR DOES THE REVERSE NEED TO BE

If you disconnect the wire from the brake light switch to the turn signal switch that will by-pass the turn signal switch. THEN you will have to connect the BLUE wire from the third brake light, to the original brake/turn bulbs(RED ones)....If you change to the EURO version of the lights(if available), you may also have to change the turn signal switch and harness.... Most of the rewiring can be done under the dash, but you may have to run new wires to the brake lights. Hope this works for you.

p.s. Welcome to the Forum :thumbs:

The euro-version of the lights are discontinued and no longer available. (that would have made things easier :) )

Citydriver, You say it's all behind the dash. Were do I reach it?

Are there any online-pictures of a service manual describing it?

(I tried to search the forum but the search function didn't seem to work)

And thanks alot for the help

DONT CUT THE WIRES UNDER THE DASH. YOU CAN DO ALL THE WIREING AT THE TAILLIGHTS A HOLE LOT EASIER

THE ONLY THING YOU WILL NEED TO FIGURE OUT IS THE REVERSE LIGHTS, I DONT KNOW THE LAWS FOR WHAT COLOR THEY SHOULD BE OR HAVE TO BE

AS LONG AS THIS WIRE DIAGRAM COLORS ARE CORRECT THAT I AM LOOKING AT THEN ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS

REVERSE LIGHT WIRE COLORS ARE LIGHT GREEN AND BLACK

TURN SIG WIRE COLORS (LEFT SIDE YELLOW)(RIGHT SIDE DARK GREEN)

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SWITCH THE (YELLOW WIRE WITH THE LIGHT GREEN WIRE ON THE LEFT SIDE)(AND THE LIGHT GREEN WITH THE DARK GREEN WIRE ON THE RIGHT SIDE)

THATS ALL YOU WILL NEED TO DO TO GET THE REAR THE WAY YOU WANT IT,

But when I remove the taillight housing I only have four wires:

1. Ground

2. Parking light

3. Turnsignal/brake

4. Reverse

So I need to find where the turn/brake merges.

Unfortunately I do not have a wiring diagram for that year that I can reference. But I do know that there is a wire from the brake light switch that goes to the turn signal switch (It is a WHITE colored wire on my old body style). You should be able to test this WITHOUT CUTTING ANY WIRES by disconnecting the harness from the Turn Signal Switch and probing the connections with a test light, the WHITE wire should have power when the BRAKE pedal is applied. And this same circuit powers the BRAKE LIGHT RELAY in the underhood Fuse/Relay center, which supplies power to the LIGHT BLUE wire. You should try and get the correct wiring diagram for your truck to verify the wire colors and the circuits they control. But if you disconnect the LIGHT BLUE and the WHITE wire from the turn signal switch harness by removing the terminals from the turn signal switch harness connector, this will disable the brake light function of the turn signal switch (This can be done inside the vehicle at the steering column, but I do not have any pictures for you) Then you will have to run a seperate wire from that LIGHT BLUE wire to the tail light assemblies to power the brake lights.

AGAIN I must advise you to try and get your hands on the correct wiring diagram for your truck to verify ALL the wire colors and applications BEFORE CUTTING ANYTHING.....Unfortunately your needs require some trial and error, so if you DO CUT make sure you have enough room to re-connect/splice the wires. GOOD LUCK!
