Possible A/C Problems

Alright...so I think I might be low on freon (sp?). After the truck has been parked in the sun all day I start it up. It takes a minute for the A/C to start blowing cold air (for obvious reasons). I start going and it is blowing somewhat cold and is getting colder. I come to the first stoplight and it starts blowing uncomfortably hot air. I start moving again and it starts cooling off. Again, next stoplight it is blowing hot again. After that I am on the highway and it starts blowing cold constantly and blows really cold the rest of the drive home.

What is the problem? Low Freon? Should I have an a/c service done? If it is low it seems like there is a leak somewhere....

Thanks for any help!

Hey there,

I had a similar issue with my wife's Jeep. I opened the hood and could see the A/C unit cycling on and off. I charged it up and it stayed on. Did it with a $10 can of 134 freon from the local megalowmart and it's blowing ice. Sure there may be a leak. I just called a buddy who does residential and commercial HVAC and he claims freon doesn't loose its efficiency... if it's low it's because of a leak. He works with R12 freon so I'm not sure if 134 behaves differently in this example, that is, looses its efficiency. Charge it up and see how long it stays cold for. Recharging it once per year at $10 beats $500+ repairs.

Later,

Ed
