A friend of mine has an 04 F150 (I know, friends don't let friends drive furds  ). It's actually not such a bad truck.

For a furd....

Anyway, he wants a tune. I pulled all the codes and numbers off it I could get, including the rear axle. It has either a 3.55 or 3.73 gear.

Other than jacking it up and counting revolutions, how can I tell what gear he has ??

It's a 5.4l 24V, regular cab (with the mini back doors).

Also, what's a safe redline for these ??

Sorry to stink the place up with such foul language. ('Nut, don't ban me, please :) !!!!)

Thanks, gang.

far as redline on a ford i wouldn't want to go over 1000 rpms since  :D  :D

My rev limiter kicks in at 6250 RPMs. :D

The gear ratio should be stamped in a tag on the differential cover. If you can't get the ratio off that tag, there is a code on the door sticker.

You can decode what's on the sticker here:

http://www.fordf150.net/howto/decode.php

I wouldn't worry too much about the red line if it is stock. The computer won't let you kill the truck (I still wouldn't want to hit the rev limiter too often). It probably won't let you rev the engine above 3000 or so in neutral just to keep you from doing neutral drops (at least that's the way automatic Rangers are). I don't know what's safe if your friend goes with a chip though.

Thanks for the info, paco. I'll check that link. The tag on the diff (two, actually) didn't have anything in plain language, maybe in code..

But, come to find out, some of this info is inconsequential- it'll just carry over :D
