Tip for the 04 Brakes

Don't even try to loosen the T55 torx bolt on the bottom of the caliper. Loosen the top bolt and get your 10mm socket and loosen the two 10mm bolt that hold down the brake line. There is hella slack in the line that will let you remove the caliper with the bottom bolt still installed. I ruined one T55 trying to get that bolt loose and finally out of desperation just loosened the line. Don't know what they were thinking when using torx bolts for the calipers and what the heck did they use to tighten that sucker down with? Anyways, got my Hawk pads installed and seated, hopefully will have better braking. Did like that fact that the factory calipers were at least two piston calipers.

Ah, no problem. You just gotta get that torx socket in there prefectly and be great friends with your cheater bar. I've done about 8 of these for personal vehicles and helping friends.

And, I have developed 8 different sets of cuss-word phrases for each. But, I haven't ruined anything yet. :sigh:

Well I'm either dumber than you are or stronger. I believe I could ruin at least two torx and one Vise Grip for every lower bolt I see.

Neither dumber or stronger, or vice versieee.... Vice grips? No.....

Just right combo of simple tools. But no vice grips used here. I just used a perfectly fitting set of tools and my "best friend", the cheater bar. You have got to have a perfectly fitting torx tool, though. No slack. NONE. And it has got to be perfectly fitting on the bolt, not off-centered, not leaning. This combined with the cheater really works.

So do your brakes work better? Mine suck. I just bled the system to get the old fluid out and they're a little better. But, I'm thinking about some after-market pads, and maybe some cross-drilled rotors for the front.

I had no problem with mine, but then again i used an ever better cheater tool, 1/2 impact with a snap on torx from the neighbour, we both tried without the impact and couldn't budge it. the impact works wonders as far as I'm concerned

I put on some Hawk pads and they work great. I called two different brake places to get advice on replacing the rotors. Both recommended keeping the stock ones and putting on more aggressive pads. Was pleasantly surprised to see that the stock front calipers are at least 2 piston calipers.

I bet the snap-on torx is better than the one I got from Autozone and then Sears. My impact gun didn't budge my 2nd bolt at all. Maybe I need a better impact gun.

If you decompress the brake piston isn't there an issue with the ABS. Did you guys pinch the brake line or use a special tool to keep the fluid from going back into the master cylinder?

I just used a c-clamp to push the pistons back in (I did remove the cap for the master cylinder) and haven't had any issue.

I like a cheater bar, about 9 feet long.  Break almost anything loose.

True, but it is might hard to get a 9' cheater bar up under the truck where the caliper bolts are and then to keep the torx seated correctly while grabbing the other end, 9' away.

Regarding Abs, apparently my neighbour the mechanic said that on some cars and trucks when you do the pads you can set off the abs and that would cause it to close and open at full pressure. So What we did was turn the key off and hit the brakes till they went soft, so the abs didn't have any fluid in reserve to try and smash my fingers off.

    • ///// Ok--Thanks for that info--I could not find yesterday when I looked for the specs on that NAPA filter what I wanted. Their website is not very user friendly. I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought. Anyway-Thank you -Sir for your response.   glenn
    • It is possible to add your own 12v outlet to your truck.  Check out this video:   I verified via GM Upfitters that pin 31 is the same on the 1500 trucks.  The wire is GM part number 84779405.   You can get the GM 12v outlet from Amazon  https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Accessory-Receptacle-25774623-13549530/dp/B0F1H9YRGF EWAY 12 Volt Power Adapter for GM   https://www.amazon.com/EWAY-Chevrolet-Silverado-Cigarette-Ignition/dp/B0915RRW6Q/ref=sr_1_1?   I just haven't figured out a good place to put the 12v outlet in my truck.   Some people are getting USB-C to 12V adapters  https://www.amazon.com/WYMECT-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-Adapter/dp/B0F87WNQKB/ref=sr_1_1_sspa? Not sure if they provide the correct amperage that a device like a tire inflator would need.
    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
