6.0L Oil Usage Question

Is it customary for the 6.0L engines to use oil? I had a 5.3L with 25,000 and never used a drop of oil. Just wondering how often to check oil on 05, 2500hd, 6.0L?? Read several posts that refer to the 6.0L as oil burners?????

The 8.1's are the oil burners. Mine used about 1.5 quarts per 4000. I have never heard of the 6.0's burning oil, especially not a new one. That is of course unless you run the s**te out of it.

My '03 doesn't seem to be using any oil. I think I'm 2500 miles into my 3000 mile oil change interval. I checked the oil last weekend and it was still right up there on the full line.

I'm running Valvoline Durablend as that's what the previous owner ran. I'll probably switch over to full synthetic on my next change.

I currently have 7100 miles on my 05 2500HD with 6.0L and it has not used any oil. It has 4100 miles on the current oil change with Mobil One 5w40 Truck and SUV. I mainly use the truck to tow on the weekends so these are not easy miles. You should not worry about it burning oil.

My 2002 6.0L Suburban with 63000 miles total has around 3000 miles on the current oil(Mobil 1 5w30) change without any oil consumption. Around 1500 of the miles since the last change, I was a pulling a 27' travel trailer on the family vacation.

The earlier ones for sure, I'm not sure about the newer ones yet. So far they're looking pretty good.

My 02 6.0L will go through almost a quart every 3k. I never noticed it until I went with synthetic because I would change my oil so frequently. There are some TSB's out there for it. Something about new bolts on the intake manifold. Not sure how that helps though.

I also have a 02 with a 6.0 and it also is a quart low at the 3000 mls. My GM tech says that it is normal. I use Mobil I 5w-30. Syn.

I've got a 2001 with the 6.0 and 51,000 miles on it. At 30,000 I switched it to Mobil 1 5w30 and it used about 1/4 quart during that first change period. Every since then the oil level doesn't drop at all between oil changes (every 5,000 miles).

10w30 Royal Purple here at 5000 mile increments and its right at 1.5-20 quarts usage. I never see any smoke from the tail pipe though.

I change the oil when the dic tells me, about every 7000 miles and never have used any oil between changes. 2004 6.0 4x4 reg cab.

'04 w/28k miles and burn 1 quart every 7,000 miles.

You might want to swap out your PVC valve for a updated

one.

GM issued a TSB a while back on this..................

 

It seems the orifice on the PVC valve is too big and

causing high oil consumption.

The fix was to replace the PVC with a different one.

01 6.0 with 89,000 miles, its uses oil, about a quart every 2500 miles or so.

 

01 8.1 with 96,000 miles, its uses and has always used a quart every 1500 miles or so.

 

04, Sea Ray with twin 8.1's 380 hp, uses lots of oil, but its measured in hours not miles. I've put probably put 4 or 5 qts. in each engine so far this year.

 

You guys talk about mileage, the boat is lucky to get .75 miles per gallon.
