I dont have a problem with cell phones because we have 4 of them.. They all have been passed down and my dad and i have the newest ones.. Now for my b-day i was looking at getting a new one so i went to the store and i was going to just buy the phone.. And she said your over 19???i said yes...  Do you have a credit card???i said No... She then says okay you are going to have to put a 500 dollar deposit on the phone.. Now what bothers me is the phone is only 220 dollars and i m buying the phone in full at the store... My friend wanted a cell phone from radio shack its one of those 79.99 phones and they wanted a 1000.00 dollar deposit on the phone because he had no credit history..

So my question is whats up with these companies when i m going to pay cash for the phone and they want a deposit over double the cost on the phone???? I told her politly no thank you and i walked out the store..

probably not so much the phone, but the phone service that requires the huge deposits..  without credit in this country ppl get screwed. maybe time to start towards building good credit?

first step would be getting a credit card. even if its got a crappy rate (since your not going to be getting the nice stuff right away) just to have one maybe use it on small things once and a while (but dont go wild thats how ppl become homeless). having accounts at banks help a little too specially if you've had them for a while.   then one day when your realllly old and about to die you should have some credit.. maybe..

it depends where you go.. who you deal with.. etc etc. every place will have different things they are required to do.

It probably is time to build some credit...

If you are young and establishing credit, open a checking account in your own name, and a savings account as well.  You don't have to put much money in them, just the minimum to open, but if you don't have a credit history they will look to see if you at least have accounts.

And you will have to do deposits on stuff for a little while, but usually you get that back after 6 months or a year, be sure to ask how long and if they pay interest.  Sprint PCS does.

I got my credit started at 19 with a department store (Sears) card.  They'll give anyone a card and I knew I'd need it when I got my first apartment for all of those things you're used to your Mom having.  IE, dish towels, laundry baskets, shower curtains, pots & pans, etc.

Their interest rates are terrible, but it'll get you started.  I even paid for a Budget rental moving truck one time on my Sears card because they are afilliated somehow.  And don't forget, department stores carry lots of tools, TV's, tires, bed linens etc.   Be a big help down the road-

I have two credit cards *kind of* my credit is good they just needed a credit card or a 500 deposit... Its still true about were you go because some places are really good about giving out phones while others are worried a little about you switching to someone else..  All i know is i went to bell mobility and i wasnt going to switch... We have everything through them now and the only thing that wasnt was my phone.. and nokia wouldnt let me switch from AT+T to Bell...  No probem though because i still have a decent phone.. I just wanted something for later.

getting a credit card was the hardest thing to date i have ever went through in my life.

I tried for a sears card said i had no credit DENIED

mastercard denied visa denied.  So i figure go after a gm mastercard (they talk about college kids blah blah blah)

DENIED no credit.  I called and #^&%#^&*# up a storm.  Said isnt the point of getting a credit card establishing credit?

Well finally i got a cheap mastercard (max ?) kept it for a month then reapplied for gm mastercard and ill be darned i got it

It was easier buying my truck than getting a **** credit card

? deposit id tell em to go suck a fat one

I found a good way to establish good credit is by buying tires or have a brake job done on credit.  They usually get financed for six months with 90 days/no finance, no interest charges.  I paid them off on the 89th day.  Home improvement centers' cards are good, too.  Be sure to always pay them off when they are due.  Don't pay the minimun payment due.  It'll take forever to pay them off, especially if you keep purchasing!

However, the charge company hates people that always pay their credit card bills in full at the end of the billing month, they don't make any money!  In fact, that is one way to actually hurt your credit.  Also, that is one reason why some people get denied credit, they are not a credit risk!

i always pay my entire bill at the end of the month

If they hate it oh well

I could have purchased my current truck back in high school without having to get a loan.  But because I didn't have any credit history, I went ahead and got a loan to help that situation out.  I paid the 3 year loan off in 2 years.  I still think I should try and get a credit card to help my credit rating out alittle more.
