Diff Service

Just took my 05 Silverado Z71 in for an oil change. The odometer is at 37,200km. They tell me its due for a differential service at a cost of $129.00. Anyone know if this is correct?

Thanks

If you tow, you should have changed it after the first 500 miles of towing. If not, I'd say it's ready. I change mine every 25K but that is probably overkill.

Regarding the price...I'd say a rip. I use Mobil 1 instead of the $27/qt GM stuff and it takes me less than 30 minutes to do it. If you are not mechanically inclined, pay the $$ and have the cealer do it.

Check your owners manual, 37,200 KM's is a little over 22,000 miles. That sounds a little too soon to me. I checked my GM service manual and it said to check the F&R axle fluid at 37,500 KM's and add fluid as necessary. You can do that yourself and save $129.00 plus PST and GST :shakehead:

I'm not real sure but the g80 might require an additive. But correct me if I am wrong.  Even with the additive that is still way too high.

No,No additive is recommended by GM nor should any be used.

Thanks for the replies so far...I could not see anything in the manual on rear differential oil change....just transfer case. Im not even sure if the dealer was requesting that I change all the diff fluids or just the rear one....no biggy I can wait till my next oil change and see what they say.

Bish,

Just curious why you would need to change it as early 500 miles. That seems unnecessary to me. I plan on changing mine for the first time at 25k, but i've checked it several times and it seems clean to me.

If you tow, it is recommended that you change the oil after 500 miles of first towing use. Reason is because the extra wear on the rear end due to towing will cause the gears to "seat together" more quickly. The first change is to get all the metal due to break-in out of the diff so it isn't working like sandpaper on your diff. After the first change at 500 miles of towing, normal maintenance schedule is recommended.

If you never tow, no reason to change it before 25K IMO.

Bish, not trying to argue with you or say that you're wrong. It makes sense, but who recommends this? Is it in the manual/dealer recommended? I've just never heard it before, that's all.

i have heard this many times also. not sure if its dealer recommended or not, but some of the best maintenence advice i get does not come from the dealer. plus, just pop of that drain plug and do it your self, its easier than changing the motor oil.

130 sounds really high, the EZ lube said to get it done at 12,000 but i think im gonna go pick up some mobil 1 at costco or where not and do it myself... isnt there a funky filler tool to use because the filler hole is on the side of the differential?

I trust my dealer about as much as a politician. I took my burban in at 30000 miles for minor warranty work and oil & lube. The dealer wanted almost $500 for a 30,000 mile service. I checked my manual and the only thing required other than oil & lube was rotating the tires and a new fuel filter.

I use an L shaped hex key to measure the height.
