Rusted Rear Splash Guards!!!

On my '01 Silverado 4x4 the rear brake splash guards are rusting out. Is there anything wrong with running without them?

I believe the splash guards hold the ebrake actuator grommet..keeping crap out of the ebrake actuator. Not critical but I think it would corrode more if exposed over time. Other than that, I can't think of any other problem.

I have replaced both of them as mine rusted out too. You have to pull the axles to eplace them and I did axle seals while I was at it. Pretty cheesy design if it just rusts away to nothing. I was nervous attempting it but in hindsight, it was simple. THe first side took me 40 minutes, the second 10 minutes. I have a Helms manual and I read it ahead and folled step by step.
