Cleaned my throttle body.....

I was having hesitation on my 8.1 when starting and bad idleing...until now. I took the intake tube off and I couild immediately tell that the inside was not what it was supposed to be. I took a regular can of carb cleaner and a rag and went to town. The littel hole, I think its the air idler hole?, was really sooty. Three rags, half a can of carb cleaner and a burnt knuckle later I was done. Started the truck up and let it run for about 10 minutes while spraying a few squirts in. Smoked like a mother, but quit after like 2 minutes. Drove it down the road and came back, let it sit and started it up and went for another drive. Perfection. Power I forgot about. I will definately do that regularly.

Is that the only area they clean in a TB service? Seems like there would be a few things to clean other than the butterfly. Id like to start doing my own TB services too, but I want to catch it all.

I think they clean the intake also, but I sprayed enough cleaner in mine to get most of the bad stuff out of the intake. I was told about "seafoam" on another forum. They say that it works wonders for the top end. Im going to try that next time.

I think when I sprayed mine, i sprayed enough for it to get some of the crap out of the intake as well.....kinda without meaning to. But it helped a crapload.

Did you use carb cleaner or fuel injuection cleaner? Just wondering if carb cleaner has any possible ill effects in a fuel injected vehicle.

Thanks............. :chevy:

Has anyone ever found a how to or a write up that details what all is included in a TB service? Id like to do my own service, and a "How to" would be great.

Thanks for the link. Is the procedure the same for a 6.0? Is the intake similar enough between and 8.1 & 6.0?

Also, in that link you forwarded, is the crank position sensor in 01s a problem on 6.0s too, or just in the 01 8.1s? Thanks.

Matt that procedure applies to all Mass Airflow Sensor equiped engines. The early 8.1's recieved inferior crank sensors and the 6.0's use a different part. Normally they last 100K +. If you knew what I know you would replace crank and cam sensors before you hit 125K.

I just read through the old post and want to make some important points.

Use a soft bristile brush. Metallic bristles come off and lock up oil pumps or scratch cylinder walls.

Use spray cleaner designed for throttle bodys. Carb cleaner or brake cleaner will dissolve many plastics like the one your idle air control is made of. With any solvent do not let it stand on the IAC any longer than necessary. A few minutes is fine but don't goto lunch.

The MAF must be disconnected in order to run the engine with the air duct off. No signal is better than a good but incorrect signal. The engine won't start and idle so you can spray clean if the MAF is plugged in but not regestering any airflow. This inadvertantly causes a temporary CEL.

Your engine will likely idle faster for a short time on restarts, when engauging gears, or turning on the A/C until the programming adjusts to the freer flow of air through the IAC, this is normal.

Use Sea Foam Deep Creep for cleaning out the intake. You spray half of it in and let it stand overnight then flush with the rest on a running engine. Never pour any liquid solvent into the intake system.

Be prepared for excessive smoke when doing this procedure.

A quick blast of Brake/electric motor cleaner on the MAF filiament works wonders BUT,

Do it only on a previously disconnected and removed MAF. Make sure it has completely dried before reusing. Do not burn brake cleaner in the engine. It stinks up the convertor big time and it takes several miles to blow off with even the smallest burn.
