cataletic converter replacement

Recommended Posts

I was told by my local backyard mechanic ( cousin) that if I replaced my cateletic converter with a straight pipe I would see more gas mpg and horse power- has anyone ever heard or tried this?

Yes. This is true. When you do you this you decrease backpressure therefore producing more horsepower. Your motor will also breath a little easier giving you a few extra miles per gallon. The downside is this is against the law pretty much everywhere. No exhaust shop will perform such a task. The fine is pretty big.

The exact law, exept for California, is that pre - 1973 vehicles are exempt from emission laws...i.e. catalytic converters, egr and the likes. Who the hell knows what kind of emission law California has, they change it daily. The extra 5 horses arent worth it.

By the way, he is right.......the fine for emission system tampering, specifically catalytic converter removal, is $100,000. Yes, U.S Dollars.

Merry Christmas.
