Lifted Avalanche Questions

I really love the big stance look of the lifted Avalanches I have seen.  I definately want to go that route with mine.  Problem is I am a bit new too the truck mod scene.  I have a list of questions I would love to get answered.

Since I don't have a ton of money to throw down  up front I am hoping to do this mod in separte stages if possible.

1.  Can I get some big tires first and hold off on the lift. (I was thinking maybe the Pirelli scorpions)  What size tire would be recommended for a beefier stance but not an outragous monster truck effect.

2.  I think I want to keep my stock 17" wheels.  Is this possible if I want to get the bigger tires?

2.  I'm thinking of a lift around 3".  What is recommended? a body lift or a suspension lift.  I have heard of both but don't know the benefits or reasons for one vs. the other.

If you aren't looking to spend a great deal of money I'd do the body lift over the suspension.  The body lift cost BradyB 700 installed, and you won't even be able to buy a suspension lift for that amount.

For tires, you can put some 285's on your truck in the stock form, anything more will start to rub.

If you're looking to go moderate lift and just get the aggressive look I would go the route that bradyb did and get a body lift and some 305's.

I agree with chevy4x4trucks. If you just want bigger tires a bodlylift is for sure the way to go like brabydid on his. With a 3" bodylift you could mount 33's as long as you stay with the factory rim. If you go wider on the rims you will be doin some rubbing.

The suspension kit comes in handy if you need ground clearance, especially over them rocks in Azusa canyon.

I am planning a lifted Avalanche also.  I will be installing 285 BFG mug terrain's on stock 17" wheels first (cranked torsion bars).  Next I will be adding a suspension lift, I think the suspension lift is worth the extra money.

I had a 94' ext. cab that I bought new and installed a Pro Comp lift in it in '95.  I was running 295 BFG's on 8" rims.  I never had any problems and the ride and performance were much improved over stock.

I was planning on not modifing the Avalanche but I miss the suspension of my old truck.  I would do it now but am waiting on the details of the Pro Comp kit that they are working on.  I am planning on either a Pro Comp or Rancho kit lifted to 4" with 285's on stock rims.
