Engine block heater question

I have the engine block heater option installed on my truck. I had plugged the heater into an extension cord, but it did not seem to work. After reading my owner's manual about the block heaters, it made mention about some heaters having a thermostat in the plug end of the cord...which will not work until the temperature outside gets down to 0 degrees F before it comes on. What a crock! I want to warm the engine an hour or so before going to work, (using a timer), when the temperature is in teens or lower 20s.

 

My question...I guess it's alright to cut the plug end off and install just a regular male plug in it's place? Has any of you all done that?
