developed 2 new problems

My truck (99 2500 silverado, 6.0L) has deveoped two new problems. I kind of think they are related, but not sure.

 

1. The truck is hard to start when there is heat in the engine. You first fire it up and it starts fine (almost like it is sitting right on a compression stroke). You bring it up to temp(190-200), shut it off and run into a store, or let it sit for a while. the temp comes back down to approx 160 (less than normal op. temp). In order to start it you must crank and crank and crank, it then fires and will have a rough idle and will smell flooded or rich, you can also shorten the cranking by applying the throttle (yes I know a no-no on FI engines).

 

No codes have been registered.

 

2. While on a hunting trip in PA (temps dropped to 0) we would let the truck warm up in the morning, it would start fine (engine is cold remember), then would idle down when the choke would close (I assume it has an auto choke), than after about 3-5 min it would start to hunt or surge. the Tank was full and the there was no problem driving it so the fuel lines were not frozen.

 

Since the hunting/surging has started it has thrown check engine codes(3 times - but then they clear them selves out.) but they are intermittant so I have not been able to have them read.

Most likely a leaking fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum hose off the regulator and see if there's fuel in it. Sometimes starting the engine with the hose off will cause fuel to spit out of the vacuum pipe on the regulator.

 

There is no choke, auto or otherwise. Those went out with carburetors. :confused: If your check engine light came on, there's a code stored, even if the light goes out.

So if there is fuel in the vacum line the FP Reg is bad? Right.

So it happened last night, and I pulled the vacum line and sure enough fluid ran out (assume it is gas).

 

Is the regulater a difficult part to get?

It can only be gas. Nothing else there. No, you can buy that regulator quite easily. Dunno if the aftermarket places have it, but I would imagine so.

No clue. I'm not a parts guy.

 

 

 

 

 

Replaced it last night, fixed the problem. Thanks.

 

FYI:

 

OK, so I went to the dealer with the p/n I had (above), no such part, I got that part number from gmpartsdirect.com. My truck has a 6.0L wich kindof stumped the dealer. We used the VIN and go p/n 12574986 for the FP Regulator (Total bill $113.00). this morning I looked that p/n up on gmpartsdirect.com and the retail is $60 some, and their price is $33 somthing. Lesson learned, trouble shoot with gm-trucks.com get p/n from dealer and order from GMpartsdirect.com.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built. 
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
