Never knew it...

I was out on some straight, barron, road yesterday and thought I would open up my 05 and let it breathe a little.

I got up to 90 mph and felt real comfortable, so I stepped on it a little more and was going for 100, when I got to about 97 or so, it started cutting out, like way down on power, and I would get back into it, and the same thing. After about 3 tries, I guessed it was programmed in.

Why have the spedo marked to 120 and program a speed limiter?

It's generally governed to the speed rating on your tires(whatever was factory) or around 100mph. It can be changed with a programmer or a custom tune. Just don't go faster than your tires can take.

I second that! Many people don't realize that tires have a speed rating and its important not to exceed that. Its especially problemmatic when stuck in snow or ice and the wheels start spinning freely.

The centrifugal forces are incredible and the tire will self destruct and fly apart, potentially with explosive force.

Bad enough when it happens during wheelspin. Really bad when it happens at 100mph. Plus, assuming you don't lose control when the first tire blows, the sudden load shift onto the other tires could cause them to go shortly afterwards.

As Egon said in Ghostbusters "that would be exceedingly bad".

Yeah I need to check that, now that you bring it up, those Generals that came factory on my 17's probably max out at about 55!

I'll likley never do that again, I just wanted to see how the truck felt at higher speeds, usually I stick to just below 70 on the hiways.

"That would be exceedingly bad" Such an awesome quote. I would guess those generals are S rated. What is that, like 106 MPH?

who spins there tires to 100mph?

Speed ratings are based on laboratory tests where the tire is pressed against a large diameter metal drum to reflect its appropriate load, and run at ever increasing speeds (in 6.2 mph steps in 10 minute increments) until the tire's required speed has been met.

I guess a lot of us should be dead now!!! :D

There was a time when there were no "speed rated" tires, and, a built in speed limiter was unheard of !!!

As for spinning the tires 100mph, no problem, my big block El Camino can peg the speedo spinning the tires any time I let it !!! :P
