Grounding The TB

Recommended Posts

I know that on some new little import cars that have electronic TB's if you run a new separate ground wire from the TB to the ground on the battery there will be a large difference in the throttle response. I know on the new Z350's and the mazda 6's this will make a difference, but has anyone done this to their truck yet? My friends that did it to their imports used either a #10 or #12 AWG wire and just put it to any bolt thats directly on the TB. I'll probably do it next weekend anyways, but I was wondering what other peoples findings were about this.

The throttle body is not grounded and does no need to be since the motor is grounded by way of the PCM. Grounding the body itself will make no difference.

I think that is the reason for the grounding. The PCM control.

This is the first I have heard of this but I could see where it may work. By installing a separate ground you would bypass any type of torque management control the pcm my have.

I would like to try this but already have a tune to get rid of the pcm throttle control (abuse mode and torque management) so I don't know if there will be any difference or not.

If anyone tries this please post results.

The throttle body has no electrical connection to the throttle actuator. Grounding it will not make a difference and will not stop torque management. GM is smarter than that.

redvett is right, i took it apart and saw exactly what he said. I did run the wire anyways from the nut right above the intake tube directly to the battery. very little difference if any. I will say though on the Mazda 6's there is a night and day difference. My guess is that they are mellowing out that motor because it is a 'family' car. It was worth a shot, 10 mins, 2 ring connectors, 2 feet of wire, no big loss on my part.

The Acura TSX has a drive by wire feature and it really was a horrible idea for tuning purposes. What drive by wire is that the gas pedal is no longer connected to the throttle cable. The pedal is actually connected to the cars ecu and when a driver steps on the pdeal it sends a electronic signal to the cars ecu. The ecu then repsonds and sends a message to the motor saying how much power to give the motor. This acutally creates a lag in time from stepping on the pedal to time the motor gives power. Because of this system the tuner world is unable to make forced induction kits for the vehicle. All dirve by wire really is a the gas pedal is no longer connected to the throttle cable it is now connected to the ecu. For grouding purposes stick to 8 gauge wire.

That probably explains why when I suddenly floor the gas I was feeling a slight delay before the tranny hooked up - much like there was low tranny fluid when in fact it was full.

Thats what was happening on my friends cars. But now I relooked at their cars and saw that the TB is actually insulated from the engine block by plastic connectors, spacers, and seals. Thats why this is a good mod for them, it just gives a better path for the electrical 'open/close' throttle signal to go thru. But as I found out, the TB on my Sierra was already grounded quite well and thus this mod did nothing that was worth while. On other cars/trucks that have electronic throttles it would be something worth trying.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
