SPEEDOMETER ACTING FUNNY

This was weird. I was on the hwy with the cruise on. I was complaining that everyone was going below speed limit 'cause I was set at 65 and passing everyone. I slowed to 61 to go around a car and when I sped up the speedo stayed at 61. I checked the tach and and found it at 2000! Oops, I'm definitely speeding. Speeding up it was a little jerky like it was sticking?

Funny thing though, if I slowed down the speedo would drop. If I sped up it stopped at 61. It looked like it was always about 15-20 mph off. When I came to a complete stop the speedo was well below 0 mph.

Everything went back to normal when I shut the truck off and restarted it. Since then it looks like it is still jerky when speeding up but doesn't stop at 61 (or anwhere else).

????????? Thoughts?

Read my recent post (couple issues)...mine did the same thing this past weekend. Took to dealer this morning...stuck on ~60 MPH or so...(after resetting once as yours). I too noticed it acted more like the second hand of a clock rather than a smooth action. They are ordering a new one (entire cluster not just the speedo)...said lots of 03-04 trucks having issues with them, they have replaced many. If you notice, it may reset or simply move to a new and different starting point on each key cycle...No big deal to replace under warranty, 400 bucks if not though...hope this helps, later,:cheers::thumbs:

the dealer may request your truck be on the lot while they order a new one, mine does not care as it should be here in a day or so...I will have to ring them to see if the hours and such are going to be reprogrammed as well...will let you know, later,:cheers::thumbs:

My tachometer does crazy stuff when and if it decides to work...Was told they would have to replace the entire cluster for $400 to $450...Its a 01 Z71 5.3....Spent 2 grand on an extended warranty and just my luck it isnt covered...Guess Ill be checking ebay or the old salvage yard cause i aint giving that kind of money for it to do it again in another 50000 miles..

My buddies 2500HD was acting goofy and would set on 50-60 when not running, so he noticed every time he started the truck it would come a few clicks closer to normal so he just kept starting and shutting off about 15 times in a row and it's been perfect since.

jpcustoms has some nice ones if you need to replace and are out of warranty.
