gauge cluster

i have a 2001 gmc ec/sb with the 5.3. i am looking to buy a new gauge cluster for the trans temp. all the ones i can find are either escalade or denali clusters. does anyone know if or where you can get just the regular cluster just like the one in the hd's? also with the new cluster do all the message center functions still work? thnaks

Not sure where to get a HD cluster, but the 01-02 cluster from a Denali, C3 or Escalade will drop right in and everything will work.

If you swap in a cluster with the trans guage, will it work? Or do you have to wire up a sending unit?

As far as I have read there is already a trans. temp sensor wired up. They just didn't go to the extra cost of putting an actual gauge on the models they didn't think would actually need tranny temp. monitoring (lower tow capacity trucks). So, it's just plug n' play with the exception of programming the mileage. (which, isn't actually a necessity as the clusters are supposed to come with a sticker that is stuck in the door frame with the actual mileage. Just has to be signed by a GM tech.)

Clusters don't come with that sticker, though it's fairly easily obtainable. The problem is when you want to sell your vehicle. No one wants to buy a vehicle where the odometer is not reading the true and original miles, no matter what kind of sticker you have on the door jamb.

So the mileage is actually stored in the cluster itself? I thought being digital, that it would be stored in the ECM or something.

Its stored in the cluster. I put a SS cluster in my 04 with about 600 miles on it. Didn't bother programming it or putting the sticker on it since I won't be selling it anytime soon. Don't forget that (at least here in Texas) the state inspections have the mileage in their computers and will note any discrepencies in the mileage.

True enough. If I get the Escalade cluster I'll definitely take it in and have it programmed to reflect my current milage. Would you happen to know off hand how much (ballpark) dealers charge for the reset?

Dealers don't do it. They send it to a shop that repairs them. There is one in the Dallas are for those in that area. I dont know the name of the place.

There is a new '06 heavy duty cluster with the transmission temperature gauge on eBay right now. The guy who is selling it has a repair shop for repairing and programming these clusters. He charges $55 for programming the mileage and engine hours.

I think this is the way to buy that cluster. You get a certificate from him on the programmed mileage. If you save the old cluster it will reflect that mileage so that you have actual mileage on your new cluster and a proof that the mileage is actual.

My only concern is that if the truck is still under warranty, would GM have any problems with it if the cluster was changed and programmed to the correct mileage? Would a statement from the seller who did the programming and the old cluster serve as good enough proof?

My dealer never noticed That I had a tranny temp guage (HD cluster) whenever I took it in for warr. service. If he would have, I had all of the documentation to show purchase and recalibration to actual miles.

If you do it correct, you will never have a problem.
