Hello all, I just got a 2000 Yukon and one of the first things I'd like to do is get rid of the stock air filter and install a K&N or the like.

Other than K&N what else is out there that people have had good exp. with? Also, the cone vrs. the stock replacement it the cone type worth the extra money?

Thousands of folks use K&N and similar oil/foam/cotton filters. My experience was an increase in dirt in the oil.

How do I know you ask? I perform oil analysis on my oil on a regular basis. When I saw an increase in silicon and an increase in aluminum and other "wear" metals in my oil analysis, I removed the high flow filter and went back to the standard paper filter. For further comment on this topic see www.bobistheoilguy.com and read the forum section about filters.

If you want improved performance I recommend that you get a Wester's Tune.

That has been my experience.

Why don't ya just put nylon stocking over your intake? You're gonna let in just as much dust/dirt with a K&N.

I have not had the same experience and I have the FIPKII tube and cone filter. I also do oil analysis at every oil change (5000mi). My silicates stay below 8ppm and they were between 6ppm and 8ppm with the oem paper filter so no more dirt is passing into the engine compared to stock at least on my truck. I have 160K on my truck and according to Blackstone labs, my engine is wearing like it has 20K on it.

As far as performance, I'm not convinced I saw a lot of HP increase but I definitely got improved throttle response and better sound. It works well enough that I have chosen to keep it on the vehicle for the last 140K.

Not bashing here, just another opinion to help you make up your mind.

I also highly recommend a custom tune.

Thanks guys, I read that comparison....talk about some testing :jester: I appreciate all your input. One question though is how do you measure the dirt in the oil? Is that something that an everyday Joe can do or do you all have it done?

A custom tune? I've seen the commercials on TV and hear about them but I don't know anyone who has used one, how do they work and are they worth the money?

You measure silicates and a lot of other things by sending a sample of your oil to a lab. HERE are a few sample reports. Tells you lots of good stuff. Can even predict failure of components based upon microscopic quantities of metals in your oil.

Custom tune does wonders. I used WAITFORME and he shipped a reprogramed computer and I just swapped it in. Eliminating torque management is one of the best parts about a tune!

Bish...how much is this stuff to do? Forgive me I'm new here, is WAITFORME a member who deals in computers? How much is one if you don't mind my asking? and the oil samples, how much does that run?

Regarding the tune, do a search on "nelson tune", "wait4me tune" "westers tune" "pcmforless tune". They run from $150 to $500. Usually you pull your PCM (powertrain control module next to battery in my truck) and send it to them, they reprogram and send it back. I went with WAIT4ME because for $150 he sent me a used pcm that was reprogrammed so I just swapped it in. I figured I could always put the stock one back in if I didn't like it. I haven't used my stock one in over a year now.. The tuners can reprogram in the following ways. Advance timing (taking advantage of a lower tstat if using one), raise rev limiter, raise/remove top speed limiter, raise shift points, firmer shifts, change tire size, remove/reduce torque management, etc. I have a 93octane only performance tune and I love it.

Regarding the oil analysis, it runs around $19 per sample and I test every change. Originally I wanted to test to determine how far I could extend my oil change intervals with my driving habits and Mobil 1 oil and filters. 5K is about the max for me when insolubles start to creep up indicating the filter is not working so well anymore. I continue to test for PM. I do my own oil changes so I figure the $$ I save pays for the testing. I think it is a good tool to predict a failure.

Thank you that's great information, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to my post, being a newb here it's hard to get information out of people!

I'll do some searching on the tuning and ask more questions when I get some education under my belt. But it sure seems that for 150 you can't go wrong!

Thanks again!
