Ok here goes, Today I took my EVO sensor off and cleaned it with WD-40. Much firmer steering which Im very glad about though I get some squealing from the pump. Heres the problem, I took it out for a ride, and I i can hear this kind of clicking sound, kind of like riding a bike and not pedaling. Heres the thing, it gets louder and speeds up with RPM's nothing with the steering as I did it at idle. So I popped the hood and reved it while i listened under the hood and coundt hear anything! I could still here it in the cab and its coming from under the driver side dash but I cant find it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!! O yeah, I didnt put any foam back on the EVO sensor connector.

With out knowing year, make, and model. the only thing i can think of is the insturment cluster

most likely it's going to be your tach making the noise.

makes sense, what could I have done under there to cause that and how can I fix it?

really nothing the click noise has to be inside the cluster it's self. the only other click noise that it can be with the area you were in is a vacuum line leak that goes to the ac/heater blend door or mode door actuator, but they usally not rpm related

Can you tell me a little more about the "EVO Sensor"? What does it do, where is it located, and why/how does it firm up your steering?

 

Here's why I ask. I have a 2002 Tahoe Z71 that just got new tires and an alignment. It feel sloppy now, in the wheel. The shop said "we just do a regular old alignment on the machine, we don't touch the steering box or anything, but we noticed the play too."

 

I wondering if something like this EVO sensor should be looked at. I have nothing to loose.

The evo sensor is located at the base of the steering column. It controls how much power assist you get from the powersteering pump. When it goes bad/gets dirty, the steering will get very sloppy (it is giving you much more assist than you need) It will also tend go give a jerk every onec and while as you are making a steady turn). Mine did it to the right. The steering was always sloppy since I got the truck, but I didnt get the steering jerk until I got my new tires put on, kind of similar to your situation. Some people replace it but many just take it off and clean it with WD40, as I did today. It worked very well for me, I have a much better feeling steering wheel now. I beleive the setup is slighty different on the NBS. But this may help, on mine, all you have to do is disconnect the steering shaft(on mine there was one bolt thorugh it) near the firewall and slide it foreward into the engine bay. Then slide the sensor out (Mine looks like a big plastic ring inside of another below the colum brace. You will have to follow the wires up to the connector, which is wrapped in foam tape and quite tricky if you dont take all the foam off. Take it out and clean it up with some good ole WD 40 and put it back in. If you have anymore questions send me a PM and I will be glad to help.

My '97 had that clicking noise one time. I drove several miles trying to figure out what it was. Ended up being the trip odometer. When I stopped to fill up I reset it, but it didn't go back to exactly 0000. It was caught between 0000 and 0001. Pushed the button firmly and fixed the clicking. Hopefully your clicking is as simple to fix as mine was. Good luck.

would my 2003 have this Evo sensor? my 2003 I feel has sloppy steering.

As far as I know, your 03 should have one, I think they are different than the OBS but i think they are still at the base of the steering column near the firewall.

Did you push out the rubber boot on the steering shaft? If you did it will let in all sorts of noise. Don't ask me how I know this...

Thanks. I wonder if I can track it down on my NBS Tahoe then. I have to grease the intermediate steering shaft anyway, so I'll already have the shaft out.

I don't have that but you can't miss it. Make sure you use a silicone spray when you put it back in. Makes it alot easier.
