1999 Silverado Door Locks

My understanding is that the 1999 Silverado is the only vehicle GM made that locks the doors when you drive off and does not unlock the doors after you stop, put it in park and turn off the ignition. This is very irritating.

 

It is also my understanding that GM did not provide for the owner of this year model to be able to change the function, unlike later years. But somewhere on one of these forums I read that the dealer can program the locks.

 

My dealer technician is willing to re-program the door locks on my 1999 Silverado for free as I am a good customer of his dealership but so far he has not been able to find any information about how to do it. Where can the information be found?

Tell your dealer's tech to go into TIS 2000 and reprogram the body control module and turn the door lock option on/off as desired. Here's the TSB that talks about this...

Disabling Automatic (Rolling) Door Lock Feature

1999-2000 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Models (Silverado and Sierra)

 

This bulletin is being revised to update model year information, add service procedure information and change warranty information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 99-08-64-003 (Section 08--Body and Accessories).

 

Some owners of the above vehicles may want to have the Automatic (Rolling) Door Lock feature disabled (turned off).

 

You can disable the Automatic (Rolling) Door Lock feature by either recalibrating the Body Control Module (BCM) or with the self-- programmable function. Use the following procedures:

 

MY 1999 (VIN X)

 

Important

The feature may be turned off and covered under warranty on a one-time only basis. The system can be re-enabled (turned on) again at customer expense.

 

 

Connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle.

Select Service Programming from the Tech 2 main menu screen.

Identify the vehicle (year, type, fuel system).

Select Request Information (left soft key).

Select Reprogram Existing Module. Verify the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Disconnect the Tech 2 from the vehicle.

Connect the Tech 2 to the Techline Terminal. Follow the terminal instructions.

Select Service Programming System from the main menu.

Select Terminal to Tech 2 as the programming method.

Select Program Truck Body Controller.

Select Calibration with Automatic Door Lock Functionality Disabled.

When the action is complete, disconnect the Tech 2 from the terminal.

Connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle again.

Select Service Programming from the Tech 2. Complete the vehicle ID.

Select the Program soft key (second from the left). When the Programming Successful screen appears, press the Exit key.

Disconnect the Tech 2.

Road test the vehicle in order to confirm that the recalibration was successful.

Important

Reprogramming this function for customer preference is not warranty. Please instruct the customers to refer to their Owner's Manual operator instructions or refer to below instructions.

 

 

Beginning with the ignition in OFF position, pull back on the turn signal/multifunction lever all the way toward you and hold it while you perform the next step.

Turn your key to ON and OFF twice. Then with the key in OFF position, release the turn signal/multifunction lever. Once you do this, you will hear the lock switch lock and unlock.

You are now ready to program the automatic door locks. Once you release the turn signal/multifunction lever you will have ten seconds to begin programming. If you exceed the ten second limit the locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate that you have left the program mode. If this occurs, to continue programming your locks go back to step 1 above.

The following is a list of the available programming options:

 

All doors lock at 24 km/h (15 mph), only driver's door unlocks when key is removed: Press the LOCK side of the power lock switch on the door panel ONCE, and then the UNLOCK side ONCE.

All doors lock at 24 km/h (15 mph), all doors unlock when key is removed: Press the LOCK side of the power lock switch on the door panel ONCE, and then the UNLOCK side TWICE. (This is the factory setting)

All doors lock at 24 km/h (15 mph), none of the doors unlock when key is removed: Press the LOCK side of the power lock switch on the door panel ONCE, and then the UNLOCK side THREE TIMES.

No doors lock at 24 km/h (15 mph), none of the doors unlock when key is removed (Turns off automatic lock feature): Press the LOCK side of the power lock switch on the door panel TWICE.

You can exit the program mode any time by turning the ignition to ON. The locks will automatically lock and unlock to indicate you are leaving the program mode. If the lock/unlock switches are not pressed while in the programming mode, the respective auto lock/unlock setting will not be modified.

hi there.. just wanted to ask if you got your problem fixed? i just bought a 99 silverado ext cab 4x4... and when i bought it it locked the doors when hitting 15mph and when i turned the ignition off it unlocked both doors... yesterday it had a new sound system installed (it came with no head unit or speakers, no audio system at all) this installation included installing a new amp so the battery was disconnected for a while.. i dont know if i can blame my problem on the battery being disconnected but when i got the truck back... it still locks the doors when hitting 15mph but! now when i turn off the ignition it wont unlock the doors! and it is very annoying! i read in other forums that the procedure of holding the hi beam lever and turning the ignition on and off twice will get u into programming the automatic door locks but my truck does not respond to that... i do the on off twice thing but the doors dont lock/unlock so that is not working... now.. can someone explain to me why is it that 2 days ago my doors unlocked when turning off the ignition and now the dont? any help that doesnt involve plugging a device to my trucks computer.. cause it came with the computer reprogrammed for better performance and MPG but it didnt come with the programmer chip so i cant reprogram it if another device returns it to factory settings.. thats a risk im not willing to take.... any help at all?? i know there must be some procedure involving pressing some switches or something that will re-activate the automatic unlock....
