GMC Yukon XL Keys

I have a 2005 GMC Yukon LX 2500. I would like to have a couple of spare keys made for hide-a-key purposes. The key guy at the local hardware store (this guy seems very knowledgeable) told me that I need to be careful with newer GM's in that some have a transponder feature that do not allow keys not made and coded by the dealer to work properly. Is this true and how can I tell the difference?

Your key is nothing special and has no transponder in it. The theft control is all within the lock cylinder and housing, not the key. Transponder keys have a "+" symbol on the shank of the key, near the head or may say "PK3".

Even on the transponder keys, there is nothing special about the cut. If your hardware store guy had one of these transponder keys and cut one for say, a 2005 Malibu, it would work just fine once programmed.
