Start up fan noise

Is it normal to hear, what I think is the coolant or tranny fan, kick on immediately after every start-up?  It stays on for about 30 seconds and goes off.  Is anything wrong??

Yep...  Some are worse than others, but what you hear is the fan for the radiator.  My doesn't do it all the time, but occasionally it will go for about a block or so after I take off.  I rarely let my truck idle for more than 15 seconds before I pull out of the garage.

For some reason the fan-clutch is engaged when cold.  I wonder if that is caused because of the engine temp when the truck is turned off???

I know the S-10's with the 4.3L used to do this all the time...  They would just "roar" under the hood when going down the road after start-up.

I'm in the San Diego area.  It does it on both hot and cold days, mornin' to evening.  Might have the dealer look at it when I take it in to get the driveline clunk fixed before transferring to N. Carolina in July.  Thanks.

I dont know but I have some weird noise coming from my engine at startup.  I think it has something to do with the pulley system.  It will make this noise for well a couple of minutes...but if you put a load on the engine (even the slightest) it goes away...take your foot off of the gas and it comes back..damn annoying if you ask me.  However no one has been able to diagnose it..

Bigpunn - I wonder how a computer update could affect the fans on trucks which I think are mechanical (whereas on some other vehicles, like my prev 98 Z28, the fans were electrical and indeed were controlled by the computer (and HPP3)).

Sarah,

You're prob sounds like an idler pully or the spring tensioner is bad.

Thanks Shaners,

I thought it had something to do with the pulleys.  I'll have to have what you said checked out.

Aww...now you've got me missing my 92 Jimmy...that thing roared like all #### when you first started it up.  Off course it also put out some blue smoke due to some valve seal issues, but that was taken care of when a newer used engine was dropped in due to a bad crankshaft...ching ching ching...memories.
