recall notice FYI

GM has a problem with fixing "issues" on subsequent models... even if they know there is a problem. Seems to happen alot (intermediate steering shaft for example, discovered in '03 and still not fixed in '05  ).

At least it looks like they fixed the tailgate strap problems with the '05 models  .

Oh yeah? My 2005 Silverado tailgate straps are not both in tension when the gate's down. One is about 1/8" too long. So one strap carrys all the weight. Sounds like it's going to be a problem.

I went to the dealership a week after I bought my '05 last March. When my tailgate was down it was only supported by one cable, the other had slop in it. They had a mechanic come out and did a bunch of measurements to see if my tailgate was warped or if the bed was twisted somehow. He didn't notice anything and gave me a set of new cables to put on.

So at home I now had 4 cables to play with, 2 original and 2 new ones. It didn't matter which cable I put on which side the left side always had slop. Turns out the mounting holes on the bedrails were not drilled in the same place.

eerrrr they are recalling these again???

The article that you quote sez:

"The recall hits Chevrolet's Silvarado and GMC's Sierra pickup lines for model years 1999 and 2000. Most of those affected, 805,368, are in the U.S."

For what it is worth, my '05 cables are stainless steel and are equal length. The recalled cables are galvanized and are corroding.
