Which muffler?

I have the 4.8 V-8. And I was just wondering if anyone has ever just replace the muffler alone. I am looking to increase my performance and mileage. And I was wondering what kind of muffler did you use?

A friend of mine just had a "Flowmaster" put on his 5.3L.  I think it was the "70 series".  It was just a little shorter than the stock muffler, so the muffler shop spliced in a small piece of pipe.

He is very happy with it...  Louder than stock, and sounds nice outside the truck, but not a whole lot louder in the cab.  I think the exhaust would be very similar, if not the same on your 4.8L.

DynoMax UltraFlo Welded Race Series muffler, part# 17223.  It's a single 3" in/out.  It flows 2200+ cfm.  I have one on mine and it sounds good.  There is no drone in the cab.  When you are cruising along in overdrive at about 60-65 you can barely here it.  It sounds good when you get on it.  It is 6" round and about 21" long.   :D  I always bought flowmasters, but after buying the Dynomax I will not be buying flownasters anymore.

I have a 02 Tahoe 5.3l which come stock with a 3" pipe all the way out so I just replaced the muffler. I went with the flow 70 also which wasn't loud in the cab but still has that deep sound outside go to the flowmaster web site they have sound clips of differant series of mufflers..

So did he just replace the muffler only then? Do you know if he felt much difference.

He just replaced the muffler...   I don't know if he feels any performance gains or losses.  Like Boomer says, it sounds nice outside the truck, but it's not overwhelming inside the cab...

So have you noticed any power increases or a increase in your gas mileage?

A catback or muffler is not going to give a power increase that you can really feel with the seat-o-pants meter.  Gas milage was very slight.  I change my exhaust just for the sound.  I can't stand it too quiet.

how much does that flowmaster 70 cost?

I don't think the muffler itself is very expensive.  My friend from work had all the work done at an exhaust shop so I'm guessing he paid retail price for it.  They removed the stocker, installed the Flowmaster with a small extension pipe and then re-welded the whole system.  I think he paid $150-$175 for the whole deal...

I have not heard the truck because he doesn't drive it to work, but other people that have says it is still quiet in the cab, and sounds nice outside....
