OIL CAP CONCERN

Recommended Posts

Changed my oil for the first time, oil filler cap was extremely tight and appeared to have a good bit of condensation! Wiped it down, and put some fresh oil on the threads and o-ring, seems good now. Anyone have this problem, if you do Id recommend lubing the cap! Let me know guys. Thanks

My 97 is always a pain in the ass. Lubing the oil ring didn't do anything for me.

I recommend replacing your PCV valve and checking the operating temperature of the thermostat. Condensation in the crankcase is a problem.

In colder weather with alot of short trips this happens more often than not. It isn't caused necessarily by a thermostat or PCV. It is caused by not driving the vehicle long enough to get it up to proper operating temperature to boil off moisture accumulated during the cool-down when parked. When alot of shot trips are done and the engine doesn't boil off said accumulation it collects in the engine. The oil cap is usually the first place to see it.

2004 up does not have a PCV valve any more.

Do they just use the fixed orifice type or what?

Yes and its part of the cylinder head.

Somehow me thinks thats a real bad idea...

Your right. They did a similar deal with late model Caddy's. Eliminated the PCV valve altogether, used an LS6 valley cover (relocates where crankcase air is drawn from, valve cover is a BAD idea unless you run a catch can!) and use a VENTED oil filler cap. When a certain amount of pressure is built in the crankcase the cap pops the pressure off. And it dont work for s**t!
