Computer Reset

Gentlemen,

Does disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes really reset computer codes? I have a 2000 5.3 extended. I have heard that this can only be done by a reader.

Disconnecting the battery will not reset codes.

Advance Auto Parts, Auto Zone, etc. can. You don't have to go to a dealer.

Disconnecting the battery does not clear or reset codes in an OBD2 vehicle. You are correct, you need a scanner or code reader type tool to do it. Many of the codes will reset themselves though after a number of cycles without the error present that set the code in the first place.

Go to the underhood fuse box with the key to on (not running though)

Pull the ECM1 and ECMB fuses, leave them out 30 sec. Put them back in, that clears the codes.

I do this when my EGR sticks and throws a code.

Clears it every time.

If you had a handheld programmer (predator, hypertech, superchips) you can view and clear codes temporarily but they will come back if there is an issue.
