Cat back exhausts..

Hey gang. I have gone to several websites (Magnaflow, Borla, SLP, Flowmaster and even Edelbrock) and seem to come up short for what I am looking for.

I have a 06 2500HD, regular cab long bed with the big block 8100 (allison six speed auto) 4x4.

I see many listings for the extended cab, with either the long or short bed, but hardly a one for the regular cab.

So, i pretended my truck was an '05, maybe their would be more options, nada.

I was looking at either a Magnaflow or a Flowmaster series.

Hey, i got a big block, i want to be able to hear it! At idle and getting on it. Anybody seen the size of the muffler for the stock system? Its HUGE!!

Any thoughts or ideas?

I took out the huge stocker, added a Dr Gas X pipe, and dual SLP Loudmouth 2 bullets and had some custom pipes bent. Go to any decent exhaust place and they should be able to do just about anything you want.

I completely understand wanting to hear your Big Block...buy why would you cut off a perfectly good muffler / exhaust and replace it? Why spend the $$ unless you have to?

If (and/or when) my stock muffler goes kapoots, I'll get a new one. I'd rather spend my bones on Westers and intake to make her go fast :banghead:

Probably for the same reason some of us buy tires, lifts, tunes--'cause that's what we want whether we need it or not.

I am putting on a Magnaflow muffler to replace the stock cannon sized container.

Lee, what you've found out is that several circumstances prevent there being a cat-back system for your truck.

First it's a reg cab long bed. This is a small percentage of HD production nowadays. No company is in a hurry for such a small market.

Second the exhaust system is already plenty big, only the muffler needs replacement for a performance exhaust. Why cat-back with what you already have?

Third even if both of these things weren't true your truck is so new that most companys wouldn't have been able to have everything ready including a part# for it if they wanted to. They have to make sure it will fit any changes. If you look in the right places on their sites you might actually find one looking for a truck like yours for testing and get the whole thing for free.

Just do like I did and recommended to Eric and use this muffler with fresh dual 3" tails: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd...one=main&id=476. It's got the X-Path core so you spend less to get all the goods.

Presto, instant cat-back that sounds and performs great without being obnoxious.

Makes alot of sense what you said Vernon about only goin the muffler route and not the whole exhaust, ALOT cheaper too.

Not sure what the dimensions are on the stock muffler, havent crawled under the truck yet (been too wet up here in Maine).

Looked up that part number for that Magnaflow muffler and found one for $103 at summit.

I know the Magnaflow is a universal application, but would it work for my application?

I would think if i took it to an exhaust or muffler shop, they would have no problem taking the old one out and putting in a new one, welding it also.

Thanks for the help.

Or, spend $$ on gas? I don't know about anyone else, but when I step on the happy pedal, my big block makes a sound like when you get to the bottom of your McDonald's cup. SLUUUUUUURPPPP! LOL! :banghead:

    • Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas

I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.
    • Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?
    • What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way too big headlights (similar to a previous non-Wrangler SUV) should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crossing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...
