Inner tie rod gone bad

I was wondering if anyone else has had any problems or had any defective inner tie rods on your trucks. I had my truck up on jacks today and noticed that the drivers side wheel felt loose. I was able to pivot the wheel side to side about a half inch or more. The passenger side is fine and is stationary while the other pivots. Before anyone tells me to tighten the lugs, don't. They're good 'n tight.

They put the same type of tie rods on the H2 (my truck) and they break when under heavy offroad use. It's the weakest link on the H2. I bought some bomb-proof ones from Fabtech. They won't break no matter what you do. It looks like they make them for Sierras/Silverados:

My 2005 GMC Sierra has only 33,000 miles and is just past the thirty-six month warranty period. I have regularly (every three months) changed the oil, and gotten clean checkouts on things like the steering linkages. Then, on October 16, 2008, when I get a pair of new tires, the mechanic (new place to me) shows me the play and noise in the left hand inner tie rod.

 

I checked Google and found that this seems to be a frequent failure on the Sierra truck. Others also?

 

I called a local (Atlanta, GA area) GM dealer, who has told me that he will take care of it. This statement was made after I told him the mileage on the truck. So, while I will get what smells like warranty repair, I wonder if GM has, or should, issue a recall or service bulletin on this.

One of mine went bad around 12K, the other one around 50K. I replaced them with Moog. No problems sense.

Those tie rods are plastic instead of metal, they fatigue over time alot more frequently than aftermarket ones, like MOOG. I have had my tie rods replaced at least 4 times that i can remember - All done under warranty... I would not even bother with the tie rods from the factory and instead run with some reputable ones like Moog.

as for GM issuing out a recall, only those are mandated for safety items, tie rods are generally not considered as they fail over time - giving the owner the sense of somethings wrong vs something like tire tread separation. There are tons of service bulletins regarding this but Service Bulletins are designed to let the dealership understand and fix the problem. Special Policies would be the most approprate avenue for GM if they were going to address this concern, but I am willing to bet that they will not.
