Vehicle: 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4, ECSB.

I have a plastic bedliner (purchased and installed by previous owner), and there are two machine screws in the center of tailgate holding the bedliner on. My questions are:

1) Do these screws hold the tailgate handle assembly in? I'm assuming that's what they do because of the placement.

2) Do they thread into a solid piece of steel, as opposed to something aluminum or thin sheetmetal?

3) If the answer to number 1 is yes, then if I remove these screws, will my tailgate handle assembly fall into a deep black hole never to be seen again?

Thanks everyone!

1) Yes.

2) Forget.

3) No, but undo them with the tailgate down to be sure.
