Hey all , I am new here, Got a question. I currently have a k&n in my stock airbox,is taking off the top of the lid as good as an air system( like an Airaid)? By the way I have a 97,350,Gibson cat-back. Thanks for your advice.

I never thought about that, but it might work. Only problem would be that you are now getting the warm engine air as apposed to cool air that the snorkel takes in from the front fender.  On the K&N gen. II's it has a heat shield that prevents some of the engine air from getting to the filter. If I remember right, the air filter on my '98 is a cone style with a closed end. Is that right?

BTW, welcome to the site!

On the Av, the top of the box is the clean side of the air filter, so it's probably not the right side to remove.

I ahd a 98 GMC and put a KN FIPK on it and the guy at my local truck shop said that I wasted 300 dollars and that just taking the lid off is what I should have done, considering I already had the KN I dont know if hes right but thats what he said.

Doesn't the lid provide the seal on the filter?  I sure wouldn't want a loose air filter on my truck...

Shaners, I think its a cone style filter with a clamp on one end and closed on the other.

You can take off the top of the airbox, but you MUST flip it over and put it back on, other wise the airfilter is doing nothing. Not sure what year truck you have, but the old style circular "boxes" can be done this way.
