Homelink wiring help please

I have a '04 K1500 Silverado crewcab that I'm in the process of adding the overhead console with the Homelink system. When I took down my overhead console I unhooked the wiring harness, which consist of a 3 wire hook-up. The colors are black, orange and grey. The problem is the new console with the Homelink system is a 5 wire hook-up. I was wondering if anybody knew what the other 2 wires are for? The colors of the 5 wire wiring harness are A is orange, B is black, C is grey with a black tracer, D is brown with a white tracer and E is another orange. Can anybody make sense of this? I'm hoping somebody could explain this so I could make a pigtail to make this all work. Please post what colors are constant hot, hot when the door is open and ground etc. I don't want so screw up my electrical in my truck. Thankyou for your time and effort!

Just checking in this morning for any replys.

Homelinks just require a positve and a ground to work so i imagine that is what the 2 extra wires are for. You might be able to splice into the ones that are already there since they only power your map lights. Not sure which colors are which but one is probably a constant hot, one a ground, one so your truck can turn on those maps when you open the door. so make sure the door is closed and the int. lights are off when you test these or you might get the wrong wire.

it only takes 2 wires to run the homelink. if i remember correctly the brown and orange are the 2 you need. get some wire and test the homelink only. it will not mess it up as this is how i figured mine out. there is also a third wire that lights up the homelink when you get in and out of your truck. i used the stock wiring for the light and added a seperate power wire that is on all the time to run the homelink.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but right now I have the 3 wire wiring harness. Which consist of orange being the constant hot, black a switched hot for like opening doors and map lights will come on and grey for ground. I read that Homelink only requires a two wire hook up, a constant hot and a ground but I also understand that there is a third wire that could be hooked up so when you turn your lights on that the Homelink buttons will illuminate. So does that mean that I could splice the Homelink 3 wires up to my stock 3 wire wiring harness will work? I still want my map lights to come on when I open up the doors and be able to illuminate the Homelink buttons when I turn on the lights at night. By doing this will I be overloading this circuit. Doesn't the Homelink need to be a constant hot so that you can open up your garage doors without having to turn on your truck? Also how would I be able to splice the wires so that when I turn on my headlights that the Homelink buttons will illuminate. I didn't know if this is why there are five wires on the overhead console wiring harness. Please anybody with any info it would greatly be appreciated! Thankyou

i tried using the factory wiring and evidenlty the maps lights send a signal or something b/c i checked the wiring with a volt meter with the doors closed and it showed to be hot but when hooked to the homelink there is no power unless the key is on. that is why i finally ran a hot wire to the homelink that is hot all the time. i then used one of the factory wires for the lights on the homelink. if you use the right wire it will light up upon entry and exit of your truck. trust me it was maddening figuring it out. lol

So far I think I have figured out that the other two wires are for constant power for the Homelink and the other wire is for when you turn on the lights on, the lights on the Homelink button lights up. As for the black wire they just connected it with the map light ground. Since I only have the 3-wire harness I'm going to have to run a wire for the Homelink buttons lights to light up. Anyone know where is the easiest place to pick up a hot when you turn on your lights? I don't really want to run a wire down to the dash, but I know I'm limited since I'll be needing it in the overhead console unit. Thankyou!

I have to admit I am not sure what HomeLink is. However, based on what you describe and what I know powers the roof consol in my 05 Z71, I would guess that the two additional wires are an illumination feed and an accessory or ignition power feed. The three wires in my roof consol are battery power, door open, and ground. Does the HomeLink system change modes when the truck is running (enabled or disabled with the ignition switch)?

Pick up a multitester and confirm the behavior of the wires you have. A dealer may be able to let you look at a wiring diagram for the rest of the data if you wander in at 2-3:pm when they are not busy.
