Backup Lights

Hey guys....

I have decided that I need some backup lights for my truck to supplement the built in ones in my tail lights. I want rectangular ones that mount on the bottom of the bumper. Wiring and mounting are the easy parts....finding the right parts is the harder part.

I want to spend $20-$50 for parts. I want the rectangular (smaller the better) lights that really light it all up when i am backing up. Thanks for your help!

I've wanted to do the same thing, and would have in my wilder days, but now I have not for fear of overloading the back up light circuit. If I were to do it, I would look in to whether the current circuit can handle the additional load, or if I need to run a new circuit.

On the same note I would love to be able to have the reverse light, the proposed additional reverse lights and the cargo light come on when pressing the cargo light button, but just the back up lights and new back up lights when in reverse (Make sense?). I think it would help tremendously when hooking up a trailer in the dark, which I'm scared of. I think it would need some relay's diode's and somebody that knows what the heck they are doing to help me...

better back up lights are a great idea. Just wire them separately from fuse box through a toggle on the dash, just like in a real truck (Minimum 18 wheels)

Thats the setup that I have, minus the original backup lights on the cargo switch.

I have:

Cargo Lights on = Cargo Lights, Aux Backups and Aux rope lights under tonneau.

Reverse = OEM Reverse lights and Aux Backups

It involved a couple relays and a couple diodes. I'll post up the directions and schematic when I get home tonight.

This is just what you are looking for! They work great!

Those are f'in junk. They may be graet if you live in Fla or Southern Cal but up here in the salt belt they suck. The housing is not water tight so any water coming from under the truck works its way right into the housing and corrodes the connections and bulb sockets. I used some from Wally World that work great. I'm to lazy to hook up relays and such so just wired em right into the OEM cirquit. I don't leave them on for very long or I'd go with the relay. BTW if you opt for the relay and have the tow package, just tap into the 12 volt constant in the 7 pin connector to power the lights and use the wire from the OE back ups for a signal to trip the relay. I know I can get them on, it's just all the other "ON" functions I am trying to do... Maybe after looking at wire diagrams tonight it will make more sense and I'll have something in mind to try.

I think i like the KC ones on JC whitney.com. They are expensive but look like they would work great. I am waiting to here on the instructions with all the relays and stuff to get it to work with both my backup lights and my cargo lamps.

I just grabbed a pair of $15 fog lights at the part store. There are a couple spots on the bottom of the bumper you can drill and put a bolt through.

I bought some $20 aux lights from autozone and bolted them to the bumper. I ran a wire up to the electrical center and connected it to a relay. I tapped into the TRL BKUP fuse (yes, there's a fuse for trailer backup lights!!) to power the aux lights. The relay was so I can use a switch in the cab to turn them on at will, not just with the backup lights.

The short cut would be to tie directly into the backup light circuit in the trailer wiring harness (light green wire) back at the 7-pin connector.

Jasper, I like your solution too. I have posted in a previous thread about wanting to do the aux cargo lighting too. What "rope" light did you use?

    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally.
