Ive recently had to pull off my door panels to do some reupholstry and thought this would be a great time to add new speakers to the doors. ive got a 2000 single cab 1/2 ton with the 5 1/4 and a factory componet? i remember talking with a speaker install guy one time and he said that they used regular 1 inch componets where the big factory ones were but made a fiberglass shell i was hoping not to have to do the crossovers and all that and was hoping it would be an easy swap. anyone who has any info or suggestionsabout replacing the factory door speakers, please help. 160000+ and 5 years old they are starting to sound pretty bad thanks in advance

They should be 6.5" components, and most aftermarket component sets come with a VERY easy to use built-in crossover that you can bolt inside the door when you do your install.

Thanks so i would have to use the crossovers etc ive hooked these up in my other vehicles but i was just wondering how gm got away without them or if i could use theirs thanks again

From what I recall, they didn't actually have crossovers in them...The just used a couple of small capacitors to block the bass from the tweeters.

I'd just use the crossovers that the components come with. They really are a no-brainer to install. They're just fancy inline filters, not actual crossovers. You don't have to run any extra wire or anything.

Hey, saltwater_addict, what are you going to use as for replacements? I was just thinking this morning that my speakers were sounding worn out and maybe it was time to replace them.

Hey there I replaced my speakers last fall at about 95k and the difference in sound was unbelivable. I guess I didnt notice how bad they where. I ordered mine from Crutchfield . They came with all the brackets and wiring that I needed wich was nice because I didnt want to cut the factory wiring. I went with the Infinity reference 6012 si in the front doors and Infinity Kappa 462.7 cfp for the back doors. I'm sure the stock speakers never sounded this good.

Im leaning towards the infinity refrence, maybe the kappas ive heard alot of infinity's in friends vehicles and i like em lots. Also thinking of getting the dynomat sound dampening with the tires i got on now, i either have to crank it or go crazy plus can barely hear the person next to you everyone on crutchfield who rated them gave them 4.5 to 5 stars must work really good kinda pricey but a new ride is prolly a yr or so away so may be a nice incestment if anyone knows firsthand about this stuff what do you think

Thanks for the info Wingnut I would just pull the back apart but im at school right now with no tools and wont be home for a few weeks (dont want to tear it all apart up here) but i do want all the stuff at home ready to be installed when i get back. thanks again lots of help

oh one more thing are the back speakers plates? it is a single cab but the crutchfield site didnt help me at all they didnt even have all the same sizes thats why im glad i can depend on you guys thanks

No the back are a 4x6 speaker, When i had my 2004 i went with Polk DB's for both the front and the back, they are alot cheaper then Infinity and they sound a whole lot better.

Yeah, they're just speakers. You can put plates in there, but I wouldn't unless you're amplifying them...Plates like lots of juice.

hi,

does anyone know what size the tweeters in the doors are?

I think mine need replaced, and I'm going to consider a crossover on them as well, because my aftermarket stereo is working them to death

thanks in advance!
