What's goin' on?

Hey guys, glad to be here. I'm from Massachusetts and I just bought my truck about a month ago, maybe less. It's a 2005 Silverado Crew Cab and it's treating me really well, it's definitely a head turner and I've gotten lots of compliments on it. I've been trying to treat it equally as well but am curious about something and hopefully someone on here will be able to help me with my question.

I changed the oil and air filters about two weeks ago, I kept record of the exact miles I've put on it since then and stuff but I don't have it on me right now, but I'm guesstimating at the most I've put 300 miles on it since then. But the other day I noticed when I turned my truck on where the odometer is it said "CHANGE ENGINE OIL." What's the story with that? I thought it might just be an automatic reminder that goes off every x amount of miles to let you know to do the oil change, but since I had just gotten the truck I did it pretty much immediately to get a fresh start, but I don't know if there was some sort of secret button that I was supposed to press to let the computer know that I changed the oil but I definitely am not due for another change for a few thousand more miles so I'm confused why it would be telling me I've got to do this again. I checked the oil level and it's fine and there's nothing wrong with the oil pressure guage. What am I missing? Thanks in advance for anyone able to help. :)

Turn the key on, but don't start it...Then press the gas pedal to the floor about 5 times (it may only be three) in a row.

Unless you have the steering wheel controls, in which case, you reset it through there.

At least that's how I think you do it :D

Welcome to the boards :)

Welcome, are you the original owner? If not, perhaps the previous one didn't have a change recently before you bought the truck. Resetting the monitor will get you back on track.

Yeah the monitor needed to be reset. You guys were right. Thanks for letting me know how to do that, Wingnut, much appreciated.

Welcome - as you have read your monitor does need to be reset everytime the oil is changed. Your truck uses an algorythum to collect variables on your driving habits (i.e. how hard you drive your vehicle) to determine oil life not a sensor that tests the oil.
