Towing with 3 speed- Bad Idea??

I just purchased a 1973 C10 3 speed. I'm planning on towing with it, I heard it's a

 

bad idea, to much strain on the transmission.

That's what we towed with before the 4 speed was available. Besides, most/many

of us tow in third gear anyway. I think there is more strain on 4th/OD than on

third gear. Also, depends on how much weight you're going to tow.
