97 bought yesterday ses light 20 miles later

Hey guy's, I just traded my 96 Impala ss on a 97 GMC k1500 sierra at a used car lot. It has 116,000 miles. I test drove it on sunday and it was by far the best one that I looked at over the weekend. It seemed like it was a legit good buy for 8k. So yesterday I traded my car in and took delivery of my new pride and joy.

I drove it home and then I took it to my mom's house to haul off some lumber left over from a job I did for her. Anyway I was on the highway and the ses light came on. I went to Autozone and they got the codes p1870 and p0430. So I took it back to the dealer wich was closed. I came home found this site and started to do a little research. So now I have a truck that needs a cat and probably a new tranny

I really don't have the money to fix these problems myself. I bought the truck as is and the dealer is under no obligation to do anything. They are closed for the fourth today but I plan on taking it back tomarrow and see what they may be willing to do.

If anybody has any suggestions or help I would greatly appreciate it. I feel a little

There are lemon laws..you have 30 days to present them these problems. Tell them you want them to fix the problems or you want your money and your car back. These are nationwide laws to protect the consumer. They are responsable for it upto 30 days.

I checked the better buisness bereu web site and it said if the vehicle is sold as is as soon as I drive it off of the lot the dealership is off the hook. I'll do a search on the lemon laws hopefully it will lead somwhere. Thanks for your help.

they should have to at least cover the bad cat they are responsible for smogging the truck for registration

We don't have to do a smog test anymore not even a visual inspection.

I just did a quick search for lemon laws and everything I looked at was intended for new cars. The state of Ohio says that a consumer is is covered except for the purpose of resale of the vehicle.

I know NY mandates a 30-day warranty on used vehicles sold by dealers. I'm not sure if Ohio is the same but I'd look into it.

Maryland and Delaware have mandatory 30 day warranty on drivetrain and emissions. ( I live near the state line)

Well I went to the dealer and he agreed to take the truck back. He told me that I wasn't going to find a perfect used truck, I said I'm not looking for a perfect truck I just want one that doesn't need a transmission. I guess I'll just have to keep looking.

P.S. I realize this is probably in the wrong section feel free to move it.

I am glad that the dealer took the truck back. You got lucky

My two cents:

I have always had better luck buying from an individual rather then a dealer. When you are looking at a truck, have it checked out by your mechanic. The guy that I take my truck to will scan for codes, and give the vehicle a thorough look over for about $50. Also, if the vehicle has over 100K I will usually take it to a tranny shop I trust and have them hook it up to the scanner and drive it, maybe even pressure test the tranny. $35 well spent IMO.
