can anybody tell how to do a crank relearn, or better yet what does it do??

I have heard people say that you can do it with a scan tool. Is this true??

I'm wanting to buy a new computer from WAIT4ME but I keep hearing about getting the crank relearned. any info will help!

Thanks Mike

A crankshaft variation relearn

must be performed if:

A diagnostic trouble code of P1336 is

present.

The computer has been replaced or

re-programmed.

The crankshaft position sensor has been

replaced.

The engine, harmonic balancer, clutch, or

flywheel have been: disassembled,

removed, or replaced.

The crankshaft position variation

learning feature enables the

computer to compensate for part

manufacturing tolerances. This allows the computer to accurately

detect an engine misfire throughout

the engine RPM range. The learning

process is stored in the computer’s

memory and does not have to be

repeated unless one or more of the

above conditions are present.

Some scanners are capable of doing this. Check local garages.

Anyone with HPtuners or EFI Live tuning software can do this also.

unless you have a buddy that works at a stealer, dont go there, they will charge you the minimum diagnostics fee when the entire relearn procedure only takes about 5 minutes. rip off. not to mention they might not even know what they are doing, i went to both the local chevy and the gmc dealers by me to have this done and both service managers said "we will re-flash your computer and that will take care of it" no thanks, you are not re-flashing my new tuned pcm, i went to a performance shop that had a snap on scan tool, 5 minutes and $15.

so if I'm getting this right, its like setting the timing???? right ,wrong???

I have a Snap-On Vantage diagnostic tool and an OTC Nemisys scan tool.

Niether one will do a crank relearn, as far as I know.

I will have to find someone will a tool to do this.

Does anyone the procedure on how to do this with a scan tool?

Thanks Mike

My understanding is it is a diagnostic tool only. It doesn't set the timeing etc. It only is used to determine missfires and which cyl is missfiring. It doesn't effect performance only aids in diagnosing problems.

Anyone with HP tuners EFlive etc can do the proceedure. I believe it is just a button click.

Please correct anything I have said it is what I have gathered from research on this topic. I have no first hand knowledge. I also heard if you don't get a check engine light you don't need it. I didn't get a light and didn't get it done. About a year now with my W4M tune and no problems.

I've done the Westers Tune several times and replaced the crank position sensor. I've never thrown a code. My tech at the dealer told me the relearn wasn't necessary unless you got a code. I'm sure the dealer will do it for you but they'll probably charge you something.

My dealer did it for me because I insisted (after a sensor change) and I know them well. It took about 35 seconds and made no difference in the way the truck ran. No charge.
