I am comming up on 500 miles on my truck.  I plan on changing the oil at 500,1000,2000, and 5000 miles and then every 5k after that.  I may go to 1000,3000,5000 I haven't decided yet.  I definately plan on an accellerated oil change schedule for the first 5k miles.

 

I am thinking I will use non-synthetic oil for this accellerated schedule.  I have used Mobil 1 for the past 4 years so I have been out of touch with non-synthetic oil evolution.  What does everyone use and why?

I use Valvoline 5W30 every 3,000 miles. I'm not sure why I chose that oil, but it's what I've used in all my vehicles thus far and I got 167,000 miles out of my Geo before selling it and it was still running strong.

I use Castrol GTX 5W30! I just started using it in my 2001 ZR2 Blazer before I traded it in on the Rado. Although I havent changed the oil in my Rado yet thats what I'll use!  It was on sale once so I got enough for my dads '91 K1500 and it felt like it gave it more power!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ususally just use cheapest oil we can find in it, so that has kind of hooked me on Castrol!

I use Mobil1 5w30 in the truck and Vette changing at 4-5k. I just put 10w30 Mobil1 in the truck for July and August as it has some heavy hauling to do. I doubt if I would normally go to 10w30 even to drag around a 8,000 lb. skidloader but I had it on hand.

I've always used Pennzoil in my Trans Am's (78 TA6.6, 84 L69, 88 L98).  Since 1989 has been Pennzoil's 100% synthetic 5W50 every 3500 miles.  Last three years has been Pennzoil's 100% synthetic Pennzane 5W30 every 4500 miles.  Past six months adding Fram's X2 filter every 7000 miles.  Of course now with the new Silverado if I were to haul or tow and the oil life was around 2500 miles, it would be changed with filter.

 

Why Pennzoil...just always used it. So far every vehicle's engine were original, never smoked, never consumed oil.

I probably should have said this in the origional post...

 

I will be using Mobil 1 at the 5000 and every subsequent oil change.  I just want to use dead dino (non-synthetic) oil to help with the break in.  At $4.84/qt, it would also be very expensive.

 

Is one non-synthetic generally accepted as better than the others?

Not really IMO! I only use Castrol GTX 5W30 because it is my preference. I do believe different brands are actually different, you can tell this by just looking at it. Such as Havoline looks really dark right outta the bottle, and I used Citgo in the '91 C/K and it was clear, almost white right out of the bottle. Technically you can use anything with the starburst symbol and it meets warranty specifications. This includes the oil that wal-mart sales, which I ma told by the people in the tire&lube dept. that the Super Tech is Pennz-QuakerState. I still dont use it in my Rado but I guess its as good as a pick as any other. It is about a dollar aquart and Pennz-QuakerState is about $1.60 so are you getting better oil or just paying .60 cents a quart more for the name???

MarkD, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the dino oil choices mentioned, as long as the service rating and weight are correct for your application.  I've used Valvoline, Pennzoil, QS, and Mobil dino and never had a problem, although I use Mobil1 now on both my newer vehicles (post break-in) .

 

IMHO, the oil filter choice is every bit as important, if not more so, than the oil, especially for the break-in period. So don't scrimp on that!  I know the Purolator, AC, and Mobil1 filters all have done well in tests (I'm sure there are others that I didn' mention that are great also) .

 

My 2 cents.   :)

Thanks, that is kinda what I was thinking.  I only use AC filters (since reading a filter analysis a year or 3 ago).  Occasionally though, I use Mobil 1 filter.  I only use Honda filters on the Accord.

 

I have the local Advance ordering me some PF59's.

Whats Up with that??? I guess I am going to have to do that too!!!! Wal-Mart and K-Mart did sale AC Filters, now they do not!!! I was hopeing that my local AutoZone would have AC in stock, but if not I will have to get them from the dealer or order them!

I paid $4/filter from Advance for 12 filters.  I decided to go with Castrol 5W-30.  I changed it yesterday to the sounds of "Man, that's good oil, watcha changin it for?"  Because I am A.R. about things like this, ok.

 

I also got 10 of the 5 qt. NEW synthetic Mobil 1 5W-30 for $17.64 each($3.53/qt).

      New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?

      Seems to be Missing a lot of Updates

      So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.

      Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.

      That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
