Locking Gas Cap

Anyone know if GM makes a replacement locking gas cap?? I am thinking of picking one up... because you never know after these trucks are a mobile tanker for a smaller vehicles... If they make it what is the part number??

I had one on my truck but got tired of locking/unlocking the cap all the time.

From what I've been told, you can't syphon the gas out anyways...so locking the gas cap doesn't really help.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

That's my understanding as well. The check-ball in the filler neck prevents it.

I don't know about GM tanks or filler tubes, but we could not siphon gas out of my mother-in-law's Ford Taurus. The Taurus finally died after being 13 years old. They traded it in without the dealer seeing it. I towed it in to the dealership and we figured we'd siphon the gas out before we turned it in to the dealership. The hose we were using would get stuck somewhere before the tank after we fed it through the filler tube. I guess they could just put a screen after the filler tube and before the tank. The screen would allow fuel to flow in but prevent siphoning.

It's a ball somewhere in the filler neck that will slide up and prevent gas from spilling out the tube in case the vehicle happens to be upside-down.

That's the information coming through the cobwebs in my feeble brain anyway.

Interesting info in the ball.... but I if there is a ball I assume it is plastic, and would really just take a metal pipe to force it way through it.... but you really have to be depserate to do that I suppose... Are diesels any different??

In the diesel tank you can see all the way into the tank. Also they do not even have the reduction at the top as gas does. I can stick a 1 3/4" pipe all the way into the tank.

You learn these things after a wife pumps gas into a brand new diesel.

Yes, after I did this I went out and bought a locking gas cap immediatley from PepBoys.

Sum-Bich! I could'a had another gallon and a half of fuel for what I paid for my locking cap!

Oh well, at least it'll keep people from putting stuff in.

Besides, they've gone beyond syphoning here, now they're drilling 3/4" holes into you're tank and draining it from below. Friend had it happen to his Dodge in a grocers parking lot while he and his wife were shopping. Major suck! Oh, the lot had cameras on it, but he parks at the end to avoid dings-n-dents, just far enough out that the camera saw jack.

Great... now we are going to have to armor plate our tanks if this get popular....

Or we could all just start driving actual tanks...I sure wouldn't mind, if I could afford one. Think of the mods you could do to that!

GM has a locking cap for our trucks ~ I have one on my diesel. Locking Gas Cap P/N 12495845 and is marked for diesel ~ not sure on the one for gassers tho. Mine works great ~ keep the key in the ashtray.

If some one wnats the gas, they will get it. Best make it easy so they don't do too much damage along the way.

.... But you also want to deter the hoodlums and vandals from the ease of getting it.

Best thing...alarm and a 12 guage....

Or just the 12 gauge...the alarm might scare them off before you get to have fun!
