Transmission Compatability

I have a 1997 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 that is having transmission problems (4L60E). I would like to know if a 4L60E out of a 95,96 or 98 would work and function corectly(assuming all are out of a 1/2 ton 4x4). According to my local partsman, he says that only a 97 will work in a 97 (different part #'s). But I have heard that a 96 will work in a 97 and have no problems. Any info? thanks

I understand that all 88-98 4L60E's are the same..

Mechanically I think they are, but the electronics are deffinately different. I had a 94 1/2 ton 4x4 and its transmission went out on me a few years back. I found a used transmission from a 97 1/2ton 4x4 and installed it. Physically everything worked but I had no torque converter lock up. It eventually cooked that transmission in about a months time.

I'm wondering though, if I find another transmission for my current truck. If I could swap the internal electronics in the current (cooked) transmission with one out of say a 98' 1/2ton 4x4 4L60E? Or is there more to it???

i would assume electronic wise that if you find another that was used in the same setup as your's than it would work. For instance if your running the vortec 350 motor just find a 4L60E that was mated up to the same motor.
