Tranny ?

Hey, tried to search but couldn't find anything on this.

I have a 99 GMC NBS Sierra with the 4.8. when I changed my oil over the weekend i noticed that i had tranny fluid all over the oil pan and any parts close to it. I do not have any drips in the drive way, or on the pan, but it was tranny fluid there,

Where could this be leaking from? it's only on the front part of the tranny. could this just be a seal to replace? if so how hard would that be?

Thanks in advance

It sounds like you have discoverd one of the high milage features of most automatic trannys--the self-changing oil system.

On most trannys as they age the front seal that seals between the torque converter and case dries up and cracks. However, this seal usually only leaks when the engine is running until it gets really bad. I would leave well enough alone and keep checking the tranny oil level. Remember that a tranny will never read more than two pints low, so make sure that the level is always up to full.

If the front seal is failing, so are a number of other seals in the tranny. While you may not see fluid outside the tranny, some of these seals will eventually lead to bigger mechanical failures if internal pressures cannot be maintained. My advice is to drive it until it drops and start a tranny fund. You could get another 100,k out of the tranny while having to top it off every week.
