PF59/PF47 OIL FILTER

Now that GM has recommended using the PF47 oil filter on my 5.3L V8, instead of the PF59, should the oil and filter be changed more frequently than 3000 miles, typically when I change my oil, because of the reduction in size of the PF47 filter? What are your thoughts and recommendations.

Thanks for the reply.

In my eyes you are waisting your time by changing the oil every 3000 miles. But thats me. Even with this other filter your should be fine for the 3000 mile routine. I read somewhere that WIX filters will last 5000 to 6000 miles before they need changed.

If you are not comfortable with smaller filter, simply find a CARQUEST, NAPA or any other supplier of Wix Fiters. Wix still provides us with a PF 59 equivalent. The CQ # is 85522 and although I am not going to beat up on an AC filter, IMO you cannot buy a better filter than Wix.

Cameron, from what I have been told by Wix engineers, any good quality filter is good for about 5K to 6K and then it is done for. The exception would be the new extended drain filters and I guess I am just not familiar enough with them to comment. I do know Wix supplies us with an XD series for HD trucks and off road equip but they are not yet offered for LD trucks and cars. I am hoping they will soon offer this technology for other vehicles.

A PF46 is the replacement for the PF59,Not the PF47.

You can use a PF61 in place of the PF59 if you want to stick with an AC-Delco filter.

And no,You don't have to change your oil more often if you use the smaller PF46.

I haven't run into an issue yet as I had a pretty good stockpile of filters, but I'll have to buy some for the next change. Is the 47 the same size as a 59? What about the 61? Basically I'm just wondering what the differences are as I've run the PF59's from day 1 with no issues.

Bill if I am not mistaken, the PF 59 is no longer avail and the replacement is the 46 as Rich said. The 46 is 3.4" in lenth and the 59 was 4.5" long.

I had not heard of using a 61 in place of 59. However, if I interchange a 59 and 61 to a CQ (Wix) # that both change to a 85522, which is still 4.5" long.

I know they do their job, but I never will be comfortable with these tiny little filters. It just goes against my grain.

BTW, thanks for what you do each day as a Peace Officer. My children are very young and impressionable and I am doing all that I can to make them understand what you guys do each day and why. I want them to have the utmost respect for any and all Law Enforcement.

I will tell you that I have learned of a system that will eliminate all speeding tickets. It has worked for me for over 10 years now and I should not be telling you this with you being a law enforcement officer, but I will.

I have discovered that your veh has a small gauge in the dash with numbers on it and a dial. As you drive you will notice white signs on the side of the road with black letters that read "Speed Limit ##". If you will place that dial on the corresponding # in your dash and keep it very close to that # as you drive, you will never get a speeding ticket and you will be helping keep yourself and others safe. :banghead:

Sorry to interupt this thread.

Thanks C&A both for the info on-topic as well as the appreciation. I like the line about the dash and signs too- our judge has used that concept pretty closely at times during speed trials I've been on.

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
