Hey guys,

Looking to trade in my 03' Silv. 1500 and was curious what you guys reccomend doing before getting it appraised at the Stealership. A friend reccomended having it detailed before in order to significantly increase the apraisal value. Is he nuts or does he have a good point.? Anything specific you recommend that I can do as far as specific things they look at when deciding on what they'll give for the truck..

I know there are many variables but what did you expect to get for your trucks from the dealer as far as trade-in. 3/4 of what you paid? Half? :banghead: hehe Is it generally worth it or do they under-appraise the trucks to an extreme.

More specifically, anyone here live in South Florida and have a Great experience with a SPECIFIC dealership that was generous in their appraisal of your silverado truck and would recommend going to??

Appreciate all your input and advice.

thanks

I'd recommend going to both www.kbb.com and www.edmunds.com and seeing what they suggest both for dealer trade-in and private party, then average them (or go with whichever value you want). You're going to come up with a value of approximately $2000-3000 more for private party, and that's what you could resonably expect a person to pay YOU for it. A dealer, on the other hand, is going to take the value you get on those two sites and cut it approximately in half, and offer you that much. My granddad had a truck that was probably worth about $6000, and he only got $2500 for it at a dealer when he bought his new one.

I agree in regards to selling it yourself, but do consider this: Sales Tax.

If you trade, you pay the sales tax on the trade difference. If you buy outright, you pay sales tax on the entire purchase price. If you sell it yourself, be sure you figure this into your selling price.

I would look at several dealers. You may find one that has a zillion trucks like yours on the lot right now and lowball you. On the other hand, you may find one that has someone in mind that is looking for a truck just like yours and they will usually give you a pretty good price.

Also, when new trucks get cheap, used trucks get cheaper. When great deals are on for new trucks, used trucks take a dive. They have to because for someone to buy a used truck vs. a brand new cheap one, the price has to be very convincing and of course, the dealer won't sacrifice his profit, so you will get a pretty low price. All this with the fact that there are zillions of used trucks on the market because many have traded into a new truck that was on sale, you may get a lower price.

Detail it. This makes all the difference. It shows that the truck has been taken care of and it enables people to see any flaws, if any, and takes the guess work out of the appearance of the truck.

I say try to sell it yourself and if you don't have any luck, shop around with dealers.

If you have a carmax near you go there. Lowest pressure and at least a decent deal on outright buying it. When I traded in the wife's car on her truck the dealer even suggested I go there to get the best price.
