Gas tank size

thats what i thought, but there have been a few times when i filled up that i pumped 26+ gallons....hmm

gas scam?

Filler neck. And it also depends on how the truck is sitting at the pump. But damned, I can't believe you'd run the truck that empty!

Short and Standard Box = 26 Gallons = $78 in gas

Long Box = 34 Gallons = $102 in gas

The look on my face when the gas card bill comes in, Priceless

Exactly why I drive a Grand Prix as my DD and have the truck as more of a work vehicle/toy.

To get 26+ gallons in a 26 gallon tank.........

most likely either :

- The pump was out of calibration (happens all the time)

- Your truck was parked on a slope (highly unlikely since most gas station aprons are fairly flat).

- You didn't stop after the automatic nozzle clicked off and you pumped fuel up your filler neck (not a good dea).

I've never understood your last statement as to why pumping fuel up your filler neck isn't a good idea. If you're going to go drive, then you aren't really going to lose anything. And it's still got a vent tube, so it's not like you're stopping it from venting. Besides, I can ALWAYS get at least 1 more gallon in after the automatic nozzle clicks off due to foaming.

Two reasons for not overfilling fuel tanks :

1) The tanks are designed to have a certain volume of vapor space. If you fill the level of the tank above the vent line then you can have liquid gasoline going into the vapor cannister(s). The are not designed to contain liquid.

In the days before sealed fuel systems and vapor cannisters, if you overfilled your tank and the tank got hot from sitting over hot pavement, the gasoline would blow out of the vented cap. Now the systems are sealed and the vapor expansion is handled by the cannisters. BTDT.

2) As well, if you are in an accident and the fuel tank is compressed, the vapor area can compress without breaching the tank. With little or no vapor area left in the tank to compress, the tank will have no choice but to burst, spraying gasoline everywhere.

It's a safety issue as well and an environmental issue.

I never over fill my tank because the vapor condenses in the filler tube and eventually will leak out onto my paint.

But I found this on an Ohio State website...to more inform us on gasoiline vapor in relation to temperature.

"Flammable (explosive) range of flammable liquids is the percentage range of liquid vapor in air, by volume, within which ignition can occur. Gasoline, for example, has an explosive range between 1.4% and 7.6%. This indicates that any concentration of gasoline vapor in air between these percentage limits will ignite at any temperature above -45F (flash point) when an ignition source provides a contact temperature in the range of 500 to 800 F (ignition temperature, depending on type of gasoline)."

Gasoline emits flammable vapor at negative 45 degrees Farenheit. That's cold!

So now I'm wondering...I have a 2004 1500. 5.3 liter and an 8 foot bed. When the gas light came on I recently filled my tank with a little over 29 gallons of fuel. Is my tank 32 gallons? My dad has a 2500HD and his tank is smaller than mine. I only got 379 miles to that tank by the way, I have 20 inch rims so maybe my speedo is off?

There are only two sizes of gas tanks in newer trucks. The long bed (8 ft) gets the larger 34 gallon, the two shorter beds get the 26 gallon tank. This is true regardless of if its a 1500, 2500, or 3500.
