I have a 2000 1500 with a 5.3. Sometimes when I go to start my truck It is hard to start, it usually happens after an hour or so after being driven but has done it a couple times in the morning also. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator but that didn't help. Any information would be great. THANKS

I got the exact same problem 2000 5.3. There is a small and i mean small puff of smoke when it finally starts 3-5 secs cranking and a slight fuel smell. only happens every once in while but truck sounds terriable cranking so long. It would seem like a leaky injector or something but how would you know which one?

I was just working on a 2000 Sierra with 5.3 and this problem last week. Previously another shop had replaced the fuel pump assembly to try and stop the pressure bleed down. It took a lot of effort but I was finally able to stop the bleed down by clamping the return line with vise grips type flat pliers. So I also replaced the regulator but it didn't help. After removing the new regulator and inspecting the fuel rail for defects that would allow this and finding none I reinstalled the regulator with silicone GREASE on the orings to aid insertation. Then the bleed down was minimal. Evidently the small O-ring on the end of the regulator is easily cocked and has to be just right to make a good seal. I did it twice with the same result just to verify the fix. Good luck.
