If the tires are 75 series, than the wider ones (265, 285) should be about 30mm (about 1.25 inches) taller than the 245, 265 tires. Actual size depends a bit on manufacturer, check the revs per mile, this will give you the actual diameter when the tires is rolling at recommended pressure.

thanks for the replies, both great sites and the exact info i was looking for! quick question, does the change in gear ratio really make much difference? Pull a 22ft donzi @3800lbs would i notice a difference in pulling? Thanks again!

If the total loaded weight of your trailer and gear was indeed 3,800 lbs.... then probably not, or very little.

I went from 245's to a 285 on my HD, and I didnt notice any difference other than how much better it looks. You might notice if your pulling 10k or 11k pounds, but if your doing that with a 6.0 then it might be time to upgrade to a d-max.

245's to 285's on my HD as well but I don't do much towing if any at all. I went from 245's to 285's on my 03 1500 with the 4.8L and 3.73's and the difference was quite noticeable until I put the CAI, exhaust and tuning in the truck then it woke the truck back up from the loss in power. I haven't noticed any loss in power or anything going from the 245's to my 285's on the HD. I do have a Superchips Flashpaq on the way though and will eventually get a CAI and exhaust too. I didn't have any problems fitting the 285's either.

I have a piggy-back question here... i currently have 265/75 R16 on my aftermarket wheels. i'm looking to throw on some 305s. any opinions here?

DO I HAVE TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT BRAKE FAILURE if i put on tires this different from the stock tires?

Opinions on if they will fit or towing?

Fitment you will have to trim or crank up the T-bars.

Towing you will loose your bottom end grunt but have a bit better top end. Id stick with the 265's tops.

Braking, yes. Any larger tire has more rotational mass which will require more stopping effort. Is it gonna be a night and day difference, depends on how you drive.

I didnt notice a big difference in power going from 245's to 285's in my 6.0-I pull a bass boat, so no heavy loads anyway. There are a few hills where it kicks out of overdrive than before to keep speed, but nothing to really make note of.

I did notice a difference in braking. It does take noticeably more effort and distance than before. Just think about picking up a 245 tire/wheel vs a 285 and you realize why real quick. It's a bigger workout rotating my tires now!!!

what do you mean by "grunt" ? i tow an aluminum john boat, but that's it... and i only tow that maybe a dozen times or less each year.

is the braking such a big difference that it is unsafe? something i saw on another site has gotten me concerned that i might go careening off a cliff if i put bigger tires on my truck

I dont feel unsafe at all. They just went from an easy press on the pedal to a firmer one-but still much better than any older truck I used to own.

You just have to realize there will be a difference.
