2002 6.0 Replaced BY GM

My brother-in-law in Oregon has been notified that GM is going to replace the 6.0 in his 2002 Silverado EC, 2500HD, 4WD, about 30,000 miles. It has a knock AFTER reaching operating temperature. They said it is a cam-related problem. Early-on he had complained about the CSK and was given a 100,000 mile warranty on the engine. Has anyone else had cam-related problems bad enough for a complete engine replacement?

I have yet to hear of Cam related issues on here, but glad GM is doing the right thing there. A little cold start knock is fine, but if its more then that, well I'd be worried.

Is he getting a Vortec max, or does it already have a vortec max? (345hp version)

Likely as not its just the LQ9.

Actually, more likely it's the LQ4. The LQ9 is the more powerful version found in the Escalade, Denali, and Hummers.

Still, I can't believe an engine replacement because of a cam? GM's cams never have enough lift to slam the valves into the pistons unless you're overrevving them past the spring's ability to close the valves. The only thing I can think of is the cam timing is way off, but it should run like crap if that's the case.

haha yea, thats what I meant. Sorry. Interesting case. Are they gonna let you keep the old 6.0? If so that'd be a pretty neat project with a regular cab S10 :)
