Problem # 4 - Coolant Leak

Yep, me again. It's been a sh*t storm lately. Have had a coolant leak problem for a few weeks and have been trying to isolate it with no luck. Well today as I was putting $65 worth of gas in the truck coolant just started pouring out.

 

The truck was running and not up to normal operating temp at the time. I shut it off and crawled under, and found that the coolant seemed to be coming from behind the lower most pulley and harmonic balancer. And it was streaming out of there with the truck shut off. I started the truck back up and the leak slowed to the point where when I got home (1 mile away) it was pretty much stopped. (No it didn't lose all the coolant).

 

Could that be the water pump leaking like that or maybe a tranny cooler line in disguise? The tranny cooler lines were soaked and to be honest I couldn't really tell if they were leaking or not. Anybody ever seen a leak like that before?

If the tranny lines were leaking, than tranny fluid would be coming out, not coolant. Could be a water pump, there are 2 small hoses that come out of the pump, one of these could be leaking.

I'm changing the water pump, thermostat, belt and tensioner and doing a coolant flush and oil change. Spent two hours trying to get my fan off this morning. Couldn't do it. Gave up in frustration. I'm borrowing a bigger wrench and a mallet from my brother and am going to try again tomorrow. Any tips for this stubborn mother f**ker?

A large pair of adjustable pliers(ChannelLocks) on the water pump pulley, and make sure you are trning it the right way....is it a left handed thread or right? Take a look at the threads on the repacement pump

I rented a "fan clutch wrench set" from my local Advance Auto and got the d**n thing off in about 8 seconds. It's amazing what the proper tools can do for you.

 

So far the leak appears to have stopped. Hopefully my problem is solved! Thanks for all the help guys!

I feel your pain, those are a pain in the BUTT, just a thought from my research and past coolant problems every month until I flushed thoroughly and replaced with regular green coolant,GET RID OF ANY DEX-COOL, look for yourself..

I have been coolant problem free for 3 years now,customer service rep said it was good stuff ,shop foreman told me to get rid of ASAP all at a Chevrolet Dealer Shop !!! Good Luck

Yeah I had heard about the Dex-Cool problems. I managed to get 105,000 miles out of the current pump, thermostat and hoses though. For now, I'm sticking with the way GM intended for it to be. Same reason I don't buy gimmick "upgrade" headlights, filters, air induction systems, electrical equipment, etc. I trust GM (maybe too much). Maybe I'll regret that and maybe not. Thank you for sharing that information with me though, at least I can't say I wasn't warned.

Yeah I had heard about the Dex-Cool problems. I managed to get 105,000 miles out of the current pump, thermostat and hoses though. For now, I'm sticking with the way GM intended for it to be. Same reason I don't buy gimmick "upgrade" headlights, filters, air induction systems, electrical equipment, etc. I trust GM (maybe too much). Maybe I'll regret that and maybe not.
