power window problem

I recently replaced the window switch on the passenger door after a hard short in the switch developed. Now I have a different problem where the window will not go up or down unless I give it a quick hit from the master switch in the direction I want it to go. The passenger switch will then work to keep it going in the same direction, but will not reverse it. A quick hit from the master switch in the other direction will then allow the passenger switch to work in that direction only. I have done the switch test as shown in the shop manual, but depending on the direction it is working, it shows both failures or no failure. Any thoughts as the schematic is pretty basic and I cannot come up with an idea of what is going on.
